Cubs trade Pie
#31
Bummer that Pie didn't work out. Seeing what we got, makes me wish we traded him years ago when his value was higher but ah well. Who's the new top CF prospect in the system now?

Well they already have Adam Jones there and they're not moving him. Jones is likely going to be a 30 homer guy so they can afford to not have as much offensive production from LF.

Jones is vastly overrated, much like Pie.

Well, technically, the deal we'd be regretting is the signing of Joey Gathright that forced this deal.

I'm gonna guess that Hendry knew that Pie was gonna be gone prior to signing Gathright. I don't think his signing forced the Cubs to do anything they weren't already gonna do.

Yep.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Yes, but the signing DID force it. They went from planning to trade Pie to HAVE to trade Pie. Quite different.

He wasn't going to play over Fuk and Reed. All they were going to use him for was speed. Instead they were able to sign a guy that does the same thing and maybe better, and acquire 2 pitchers for Pie.

I agree with you. I think it was a good trade. I was disagreeing, on a technicality, with ruby.

I like Pie but there's no place for him here and as long as we're trying to win, and now that we've seen him struggle, we don't have time to wait to see if he's ever going to turn into anything. I hope he does well, but when he's getting a heavy dose of Halladay, Sabathia, Burnett, Beckett, Lester, Kazmir and every other stud in that division, he's going to have a rough go of it.

I think Adam Jones and Pie could both end up being pretty good players actually. Everyone kinda forgets these guys were 22 years old last year, sometimes it takes while to keep up with major league pitching and fix the holes in their swings. Pie was really pressing and seemed nervous last year, maybe he can relax on a shitty team.

Jones showed some flashes of being pretty good from what I saw. The Orioles are a team that's able to be patient with these guys and wait out the growing pains. The Cubs couldn't and with Pie out of options he had to go. I actually think its a pretty good deal.

Yeah, Olson looked awful last year but really he is kinda in the same boat as Pie, good minor league numbers, good raw talent, he will still only be 25 this season. I think he has just as much of a chance as Pie does to turn things around. Of course what I really hope is that he begins the year in San Diego.

I see no reason why the Cubs could have not signed Gathright, let Pie stay on the bench for this season, and give him one more chance to see if he could figure it all out. Gathright doesn't do anything that Pie couldn't have done on our bench.

I'd rather have Gathright personally. We're just talking about a PR guy and 2-3 times a month starter. Plus, how the hell would Pie get better that way? We have Fuk for a few more seasons, whether we like it or not, so Pie has nowhere to play.
