Cubs Close to Acquiring Aaron Heilman

And then our only LH reliever is Cotts?

Yup. It's the flaw in the theory (which I've conceded). Though if Marshall were the fifth starter right now, we've only got one lefty in the pen anyway.

Well, if the current offseason moves are any indication, we can always trade Vitters to bring in Mike Thornton.

I can't imagine we'd only have one guy on the roster that can backup 2nd and short. I think this means Aurillia or Uribe (or hopeful, Hudson) is on the way. And Hoffpauir doesn't make the team.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I would love to have Hudson, but I don't think he would sign to be a backup when he is a GG caliber 2B.

Also, maybe Hendry has been told that Peavy is not going to be moved or Hendry didn't get permission to expand payroll. So he went and got Heilman to take Shark's spot and Shark will go to Iowa to start as some have already said. Marshall will be a fine at the start and if Shark can get lengthened out and show he can start then there is our number 5 for far less than Peavy would cost.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
There's no way in hell Hudson is an option when we already have 2 2b, he needs to be starting somewhere, and he'll likely make at least 7 million dollars.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

There is no WAY Hudson makes $7 mill next year.

Interesting thing tossed out by Fly - what if the Padres want Heilman? He's pretty darn cheap for the 2009 and 2010.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
There isn't? We'll see. In a usual market he would make more than that. He's a rock solid hitter and superb 2b.

I agree that last year, he probably would have made 8 or 9.

But then again, last year, Manny would have several suitors instead of one, and Adam Dunn wouldn't be projected to settle for $5 or 6 mill.

I don't think Manny would have several suitors at the 4 or 5 years and 25 million per he wants in any season. I know some scout said Dunn will only make 5 million but I'll believe that when I see it.

i think a lot of you overvalue pie and cedeno. it's entirely possible that what we got fro them is all we were ever gonna get. there was no place on this team for either of them. so we get heilman, who before last year, was a solid middle reliever for 3 years. i don't think we're all that much worse than last year. maybe we're better.

Like I said a few days ago, our likely righties are very, very good at getting out lefties.

In 08:

Guzman- .263 BA, .732 OPS
Gaudin- .273 BA, .692 OPS
Wuertz- .230 BA, .751 OPS
Samardzija- .167 BA, .489 OPS
Gregg- .181 BA, .616 OPS
Marmol- .182 BA, .666 OPS

I did just find out Vizcaino was pure ass at this though last year, ugh:

.372, 8 HR, 1.171 OPS

Anyway, I'd love to have a lefty specialist but we should be able to get by fine with the bullpen as is.

I agree with Tom on this one. Cedeno and Pie were out of options, and had very little chance of contributing anything to this team. I also find it hard to believe that Olsen (and his career era of almost 7), is the deciding factor in the Peavy acquisition. Hendry had no interest in Olsen, I never saw where anyone involved with the Cubs had the normal fluff quotes about him. From the Padres perspective why on earth would they show any interest in Olsen with Marshall here?

Honestly, this looks to me like the Pads value Marshall more than they do Olsen and we need a long guy/spot starter, which Heilman can do. My guess is Vitters/Marshall/Hart/Castillo for Peavy at some point before spring training.......

It's not the Cedeno/Pie stuff that makes me mad, I'd much rather have Heilman than them. It's trading Marquis and DeRosa to also help set up all these moves that bothers me. Contracts aside, I don't know that I'd rather have Heilman than Marquis. I thought Heilman also had thrown more innings than he has. I just checked out his stats and see his high in a season is 108, and he hasn't started since 2005. So scratch my he'll be the #5 crap. I have no clue whatsoever what's going on anymore. Fuck me.

If Peavy (or some other impact player doesn't come our way), then it's the DeRosa deal that is really puzzling. With Bradley looking like our only "big" acquisition this offseason now, it would've been really nice to have DeRosa on board to take his spot in RF for the 50-75 games he misses.

I'll wait until the offseason is over to make a final judgment, but right now it looks like Hendry is rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
