Wow, Heilman will be 30 this year too.
Maybe the Padres are now asking for Heilman for Peavy. Or they're enjoying jerking us around and having us acquire various junk throughout the winter.

I can't imagine we'd only have one guy on the roster that can backup 2nd and short. I think this means Aurillia or Uribe (or hopeful, Hudson) is on the way. And Hoffpauir doesn't make the team.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I would love to have Hudson, but I don't think he would sign to be a backup when he is a GG caliber 2B.
Also, maybe Hendry has been told that Peavy is not going to be moved or Hendry didn't get permission to expand payroll. So he went and got Heilman to take Shark's spot and Shark will go to Iowa to start as some have already said. Marshall will be a fine at the start and if Shark can get lengthened out and show he can start then there is our number 5 for far less than Peavy would cost.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
There's no way in hell Hudson is an option when we already have 2 2b, he needs to be starting somewhere, and he'll likely make at least 7 million dollars.

I don't think it does anything positive for the Cubs. It fills a swingman position which is already filled by Marshall and Gaudin and creates another hole in the bench, all the while losing 2 tradeable pieces for no reason.
It's becoming more and more evident, that there is no grand plan this offseason for Hendry. Peavy ain't coming and we've done a bunch of shuffling around of the roster while basically standing in place.
I would have rather we went into 2009 with the exact same roster we ended 2008 with than do what has been done so far this offseason.

I know this deal doesn't make a lot of sense to some people, but I am going to hold off judging the entire offseason until the regular season actually starts. This has been a weird FA period and there are still a lot of guys out there that Hendry may go after. Until I see the final 25 man roster I am going to withhold judgement.

There is no WAY Hudson makes $7 mill next year.
Interesting thing tossed out by Fly - what if the Padres want Heilman? He's pretty darn cheap for the 2009 and 2010.

I think there's been some speculation about that before but I can't remember where I read it.

If you're going to move DeRosa and Marquis (for all his faults) to clear room for Peavy, you better be damned sure that you can bring Peavy in. I've been one of Hendry's biggest supporters most of the time, but if he's put all of his eggs into one basket, again, and had the deal fall through again...he needs to reevaluate his approach.

If that's the case then Hendry is retard for making all these trades and hoping for the best.

Again, I just want to point out that this deal does not foreclose the possibility that Hendry's plans were to have Gaudin and another (Heilman) be the swing men, so that he could trade Marshall and Olson away. Now it just won't be Olson going to the Pads. But it could still be Marshall.

Yeah it doesn't make much sense to me. Heilman's been very good before this year and has an outstanding sinker. Make the grass longer again. Z had the worst ERA in a full season as a Cub and now you've added a sinker specialist.
Heilman had a lot of confidence issues last year and failed when given the chance to close for the Mets. That really bothers me we've added a guy with questionable guts. Do I like him more than Ronny Cedeno, Garrett Olson, and Felix Pie? By a landslide. I was totally convinced all our moves had been made for Peavy though, so it's a bit disappointing. There's no room for him anymore.
If I had to predict, Heilman goes into the season as our #5. With how this team's built, I think he'll be starting more than relieving.

Agreed, if we get Peavy then I'm happy, but if we don't then Hendry is a retard.

Well, if the current offseason moves are any indication, we can always trade Vitters to bring in Mike Thornton.
