Damn it. I wish I didn't read this before I had to go to class.
If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

I'm not happy with this string of deals. Not at all.

Hopefully Crasnik's source is wrong. There has to be something more than Heilman coming back?

Yeah, I'm still holding out hope that it's a mistake

Let's really look at this overall deal:
Cedeno and Pie (guys without spots on this team, at the nadir of their perceived value) for Aaron Heilman and Henry Williamson.
That's actually not a terrible swap. Before last year, Heilman was pretty awesome. He's cheap, and under control for a couple years.
That said, why Olson? That's the really bizarre part.

Well we are going to have to sign another infielder now for sure. Aurillia or Uribe or someone. We don't even have a corner IF backup right now.

I can't imagine we'd only have one guy on the roster that can backup 2nd and short. I think this means Aurillia or Uribe (or hopeful, Hudson) is on the way. And Hoffpauir doesn't make the team.

This offseason is making no sense to me thus far.

If we look at this trade in isolation - assuming it really is Cedeno and Olson for Heilman - doesn't it, again, in isolation, make the Cubs better? I'm not trying to be an apologist for the deal; I'm just pleased to be getting Heilman.

You are going to have to sell me on Heilman. I don't mind getting him, but why would Hendry have such a boner for him?

I would love to have Hudson, but I don't think he would sign to be a backup when he is a GG caliber 2B.
Also, maybe Hendry has been told that Peavy is not going to be moved or Hendry didn't get permission to expand payroll. So he went and got Heilman to take Shark's spot and Shark will go to Iowa to start as some have already said. Marshall will be a fine at the start and if Shark can get lengthened out and show he can start then there is our number 5 for far less than Peavy would cost.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->* Levine says the Cubs will sign backup catcher Paul Bako to a one-year, $750K deal once they clear a spot on the 40-man roster. The 2-for-1 Heilman trade takes care of that.
* The Cubs are still looking at Braden Looper and Randy Wolf if they aren't able to reignite the Jake Peavy talks.
* The Cubs have Juan Uribe on the radar as a bench bat and backup infielder.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I don't think it does anything positive for the Cubs. It fills a swingman position which is already filled by Marshall and Gaudin and creates another hole in the bench, all the while losing 2 tradeable pieces for no reason.
It's becoming more and more evident, that there is no grand plan this offseason for Hendry. Peavy ain't coming and we've done a bunch of shuffling around of the roster while basically standing in place.
I would have rather we went into 2009 with the exact same roster we ended 2008 with than do what has been done so far this offseason.
