I think he's trying to say (without blatantly saying it) that the Yankees won before Soriano was there, but never with him.

And it was all Alf's fault? It still doesn't make sense.

Stone is using a poor argument... they would have won the 2001 World Series if the greatest relief pitcher of all-time could have held the lead in the bottom of the 9th of Game Seven. It's extremely rare for Mariano Rivera to blow a post-season save, but he did against the D-Backs.

Had Rivera performed in his usual manner, not only do the Yankees win the series, but Alf is the fucking hero...he hit a mondo-clutch go-ahead homer (it would have been the game-winning, Series-winning HR) in the late innings against Curt Schilling, giving the Spankees what seemed like an insurmountable lead.

So yeah, Stone is right about it being a hideous contract, but totally about trying to pin the Yankees' demise on Alf.

Stone has turned into a bitter prick.

QUOTE Kaplan asked Stone about Alfonso Soriano in the leadoff spot. Stone thinks Aaron Miles would be a better option on the days he is playing....he went on and added there are a couple of players that would fit the bill better than Soriano.

Stone emphatically reminded Kaplan that no team has ever won the World Series with Alfonso Soriano on the roster. Soriano leads off a lot of games according to Stone and he is not a leadoff hitter. Stone added Lou Piniella has other options and maybe better ones.

I've always hated Soriano leading off but I'd still rather see him there instead of Miles. I'm not sure what all these other options are, because I don't see too many, unless Fukudome miraculously puts up a line like what BP is projecting for him.

No way in hell do you want Aaron Miles getting more ABs than anyone on the team. That would be a mistake.

No team has ever won the World Series with Alfonso Soriano on the roster? That's a weird statement. How many players that are in the HOF haven't won a World Series?

the boston red sox never won a world series with ted williams on their roster.

The guy is absolutly amazing when calling a game. His ability to know exactly what to throw when to throw it makes me wonder how he didn't win more Cy's. But outside of the game, when on the Score, or WGN, he has been starting to come off more and more like a pompus ass, or smarmy. And this was even when he was with the Cubs.

Im happy that you got to meet him and shared with us. It seemed like a really cool meet and greet.

Calling Soriano's contract the worst in baseball is stupid.
I like you guys a lot.

My opinion really has nothing to do with his comments on Alou, but I really developed a dislike for Stoney when he appeared to feel he was equal or even above the Cubs team and wanted to step into the spotlight. He was hired as a broadcaster and analyst, not an assistant GM or managers aide. And I also felt things would die down and Stone would fire another shot. It's too bad, the guy was very good at what he did however since he's back to broadcasting his want of doing more in baseball obviously isn't working out. And I have no doubt his work for the Sox is somewhat of a shot back at the Cubs but if he does like Chicago it makes sense. I don't hate him, lets say my respect is diminished.

It may not be the worst of all players (Zito's is horrible), but it is right up there with the worst position player contracts.

I think A-Rods might be reaching the plateau of "worst contact in baseball".

You mean because it involves the most money? Because drugs or no drugs, he's gonna continue to put up much better numbers than Alf for the duration of their loooong deals.

Zito's looks to be the current worst. I'm kind of surprised that people call it the worst ever though; he still has 6 years to turn things around, and given his pristine health, it's possible. He should at least turn into a Marquis-esque innings-eater.
However, the Mike Hampton deal was for just about the same amount ($120 Mil in 2001 dollars) and he's totally sucked for the entire duration of the deal.

Alf's deal was really bad, no doubt, but you know what? I'd much rather have him out there than the Todd Fucking Hollandsworths of the world.
Go Alf!

If only Hendry could have looked into his crystal ball and saw that Soriano would suffer the first 2 real injuries of his career in his first 2 years as a Cub. If he doesn't get hurt in 07 or 08, no one's saying a word about his contract.
