Spoke with Steve Stone at dinner on Friday
#16
Really great story!! Thanks for sharing it.

I was happy to hear what he said about Peavy, but it does piss me off that we still got nothing for Derosa.

Oh, and the story about the grapes/watermelon....I totally remember that!!!

Well, I respect your opinion, but he wasn't exactly going out on a limb there in calling out the team. He was spot on about Dusty though, and everything he's done as a manager to this day is proof of his inability to get the most out of his players. That post-game argument between Dusty and Stone that sealed his fate was legendary stuff.

You know, fuck Stone for that 101 years comment. That is a blatant slap to every fans face. I don't care how nice he was after that. That is bullshit.

And whoever he had a problem with in the organization is probably gone now, unless its Hendry, so his grudge goes beyond reason.

I don't care what he has done in the past. Now is now and now he's a prick.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

I love me some Brick.
I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.

He shoots, he scores. Couldn't have said it better myself.

I hope Stone's penis gets bit off by a hammerhead shark.

Yeah, I would have to agree with Brick, Lance and Butch on this as well. Ever since Stone went over to the dark side, and maybe even a little bit before that, I just can't take anything he says at face value anymore.

You two are fuckin crazy dumb.

If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

I think Stone was the whiner. I think members of the media take shit from players all the time. They deal with it, without making it public. Stone seems personally offended that Alou did not treat him with the respect he deserved as ex player and baseball genius.
I like you guys a lot.

Because that is actually the handle I've used for many years on the internet and it's what I meant to use on the origonal board but for whatever reason I didn't.

I have no opinion on others opinion of Stoney, nor do I begrudge them for whatever they think. Personally, I've always liked the guy and hold him in a very high regard.

I was a bit shaken at first by his jest about the 101 years thing as well, but I've heard much worse in my lifetime and he immediately shook it off as jest and began inviting us into a more cordial conversation.

Oh, I remember one other thing that he said that I forgot to mention. After initial introductions about five minutes into the conversation, Stoney asked where we were from and both Harlan and I said Bridgeport, but we're well out of the city now a days. Stoney looks directly at me and says "how in the hell did you become a Cub fan being from Bridgeport?!" I just smiled and told him the story of how my grandfather would only let my brother and I watch sports on television when we were kids, and the only sports on television at the time before my mother would get home from work would be the Cubs, because there were no lights at Wrigley. He smiled and said 'aaaaahhh'.

Kind of funny when you think about it, a die hard White Sox fan who used to take me to White Sox games at old Commiskey turned me into only one of two Cub fans in my entire family. Grandpa is 92 now and I'm 32....man, when I think about this it's a total cyclical wonder.

So you didn't whine and bitch to him about what he did in 2004? I guess it's a good thing he didn't put up a banner ...
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

Exactly. You don't see anyone in the Cubs organization ever stoop to a level to slap the White Sox, or do anything to that franchise. Yet Kenny, Ozzie, Hawk, DJ, Stone and A.J. never shut up.
I hate my pretentious sounding username too.

Stone rules. Best baseball mind in the game and he's a cool dude on top of it. Great sense of humor. I'd love to have that convo with him, good stuff. If you haven't read "Where's Harry?", you need to.

I used to love Stoney, but he's turned into a total douche over the past few years. I was one of the guys at the last home game in 2004, chanting his name. But he can go fuck himself now.

If he didn't work as an announcer for the White Sox, which I would do as well in a heartbeat, I don't think you'd have a problem with him.

I know mm didn't care so much, but why the quip about 101 years? It isn't just that he works for the Sox now, but it appears that he has completely bought into their Cubs-hating culture. That's the part I don't like.
