They <i>can</i>, yes. I think they'll all happen except for Fontenot at SS(I mean he could find himself there in an emergency once or twice).

I'm wondering why Bobby Scales never is mentioned as a possibility as a utility man. He's played quite a bit at 2B, 3B, and OF and although I'm not sure, I believe he's a damn good defender from what I've heard. He's a journeyman minor leaguer and is 31 years old, but he's always had a pretty good OBP in the minors. On top of that he had a phenomenal year at AAA last year. Just always confused me why he isn't even mentioned as a possibility.

He's a journeyman minor leaguer that is 31 years old, isnt good enough to hold down a postion,has no power,hits for shit against RHP and basically isnt 'good enough' at anything. Hes a AAAA guy. Some other organization could use him though.I hope he gets dealt.
A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

Aren't you one of those "25th man doesn't matter" people? If he can come in and play good defense every once in a while, why not <b>consider</b> him for a job?

I'm not saying he should or shouldn't, I'm just curious as to why a guy like Luis Rivas is talked about in the media as possibly making the team and Scales isn't.

Every roster position matters, some just matter significantly more than others. Scales sucks, if there's a roster he belongs on, it's not the Cubs and it's not at the MLB level.

They can?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
They <i>can</i>, yes. I think they'll all happen except for Fontenot at SS(I mean he could find himself there in an emergency once or twice).
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Because he sucks?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

IIRC, it's because Scales doesn't really play shortstop. (at least not any better than Fontenot or Miles)
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Neither does Rivas (but I guess that opinion is in the eye of the beholder). I really wish they would just figure out that they need some sort of solid defensive shortstop option.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Rivas played 31 games at short for the Pirates just last year. Scales has never played short in his long minor league career.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I think you missed my point here guys. I'm not arguing in favor of Scales as much as I'm arguing against Rivas. I want a true strong defensive utility player.

You all fail.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Even though Rivas is a fringe MLBer, he's head and shoulders more qualified to be the 25th man than Scales, just sayin'.

If you want to argue that Rivas is better than Scales, be my guest. It's like arguing Rosie O'Donnell is more attractive than Star Jones. I'm not going to argue in your favor or against it mostly because it's completely pointless.

So you think a 31 year old, journeyman, life time minor leaguer is comparable to a 28 year old, former top 100 prospect, that's spent parts of 8 seasons in the MLB and has over 2000 career MLB ABs? Weird.

Marshall's just dominating. 4 innings, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K today, and a 1.00 ERA on the spring. That came against the Rangers' A lineup.

I saw that and although I am excited, it doesn't mean shit once April 6th rolls around.
