Like Andy said and you always remind us, we got the AL OPS leader in Bradley. You can't look at the positional comparison but the team as a whole. We got a downgrade offensively at 2b, but a monumental upgrade in RF. If we just got Miles instead of DeRosa and kept Fuk in right field, sure there's reason to be upset. Our lineup now has more versatility and might very well be better than last year's. I don't think DeRo puts up those power numbers again either. I bet he hits 12 or 13 homers.

I hadn't really lost sleep over it, but with all you harping on it, I'm starting to agree that we need more depth at "utility," especially in the middle infield (which, let's face it, is a crucial part of any good ball team).
Because of the weirdest FA winter in memory, there are 2-3 guys STILL available who are better than any of the 3 MI's we now have, and I wouldn't be at all adverse to signing one of them.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

Do you mean if we kept Edmonds this year, or their production last year? I don't think you can really top that production last year but for this year I think we made the right decision. All I really miss about DeRo is his versatility. Unfortunately I'll remember him most for grounding into a DP on a 3-1 count in the 8th inning of game 3 '07 and booting a routine dp to start the game 2 disaster in '08. I mean would I rather have him than Miles? Of course, but I think we'll be just fine.

I think it's safe to say that DeRo wildly outperformed even the highest expectations these past 2 years. The player Hendry traded was a guy coming off a legitimately outstanding season. If he regresses a LOT, he'll still likely put up better numbers than Miles.
As for the Miles=Eckstein chatter, I don't recall DeRo dogging it, playing like a pussy, or doing anything other than being a grinder.

Pretty much how I feel. And while it wasn't as memorable as those two, he had a pretty poor at bat in Game 3 against LA. Soto was on 3rd and all DeRosa had to do was hit the ball to the right side and we get a run in and yet he decides to pull the ball and ends up rolling over it. The guy caused me as much frustration in the playoffs as anyone on the team the last two years and that's saying something considering how bad the whole team has been in each series.
I liked DeRosa but I don't think we're going to miss his bat. The versatility will definitely be missed but production wise, we'll be fine.

I've told this to Fella but I think that might be where he would be best for this team actually. He's going to put up fine, probably not great numbers, but people wouldn't complain too much if he avoids the DP's. Say he's still hitting a lot of groundballs(which it sounds like he's working to fix), put him at the top and he won't have as many DP opportunities. He'll still hit .290+ and get on base at a nice clip.
1. Lee
2. Fontenot/Miles
3. Ramirez
4. Bradley
5. Soriano
6. Soto
7. Fukudome/Reed
8. Theriot
If Soriano would be totally comfortable there and produce like he's capable of, I might like that lineup more.

I'm not a Miles fan, but for players that are tablesetter-type players, OPS and SLG are not stats that need to be emphasized when evaluating them.
