WAY to early to make any WS predictions, whether it be teams making it or not making it. Hardly anyone would've guessed the Rays would've made it last year. We could see another surprise this year, who knows......
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
The Yankees aren't going to the World Series.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I'm not going to make any predictions, but Sabathia, Wang, Burnett, Pettite, and Chamberlain is a pretty formidable rotation, not to mention their lineup that ranked in the top ten in MLB in scoring. I'm not saying their a lock by any means, but they have a pretty damn good chance.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
They could also be the 3rd best team in their division. The additions they made were nice, but the overall makeup of their team is not that much better than it was last year.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

But did you think the Rays were the best team in that division this time last year? I'm not saying the Yankees are going to the WS, but I think it's too early to say they aren't going either. Same is true for the Cubs.......Too early to tell.

The AL looks pretty wide open. I'd say there's a pretty decent chance that the Yanks don't even <i>make</i> the playoffs...I could easily see the Red Sox winning that division, and the Rays copping the Wild Card.

However, the Red Sox seem to be depending a lot on guys returning from serious injuries. And the Rays were such a Cinderella team last season, that it wouldn't shock me one iota to see them regress a bit this year. That leaves an opening for NY.

And since I don't see the other AL contenders (Twins, Indians, White sox, Angels, A's) as being deep enough to overpower <i>both</i> AL East teams they'd face in the playoffs, I think "Yanks as pennant winners" is a reasonable enough prediction.

With that young of a team and all the excitement of last year, it's going to be tough and a letdown is very possible... but as of right now I'd pick the Rays to win it all. Outstanding rotation that will be adding David Price, solid pen, and great lineup that added a run producer in Burrell who will get to focus on just hitting instead of being a train wreck in the outfield. I think they'll finish ahead of the Yankees at least.

I pretty much agree with that lineup, but I have a question. Why do you have Dempster as the opening day starter? Is it because of Z's eye infection, his comments about not liking starting opening day, or something entirely different? Just curious.

My guess is all of the above. Also, he was our #1 starter in the playoffs last year (crapped the bed, but maybe he learned from it), and he was our best starter last season. (he was even a Cy Young candidate...didn't he finish in the top 5 or so?).

Yes, he finished 6th in the voting. 151 ERA+
Pretty darn impressive.

BTW, I know it was in limited action and all, but Rich Harden's ERA+ on the Cubs last year was 253.
Small sample size, he was really babied, blah, blah...yeah, I know. But still. To put that in perspective, Sandy Koufax never had a year in his career with a number that high. It's a better number than Pedro put up in his unreal 1999 season.

Needless to say, those guys threw a hell of a lot more innings. But there's pretty much no doubt in my mind that Harden is a truly elite pitcher.
<i>When</i> he's healthy.
Fucking brittle mofo, though.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Considering Sidney Ponson had the third most innings pitched on the team with a 5.04 ERA, I think they might get a little bit more out of that rotation.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Or Sabathia's innings could catch up to him, Wang could have problems coming back from injury, Burnett could turn into glass again, Pettitte and his age could fall off a cliff, and Chamberlain could prove that he doesn't have stamina to start all year.

I see them as minimally improved overall if you factor in all of their offseason moves. They are not going to the World Series.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

The thing is, you could say this about just about anyone's rotation. Take the Cubs.

"Zambrano's innings could catch up to him, Harden could have problems coming back from injury, Lilly could turn into glass again, Dempster and his age could fall off a cliff, and Marshall could prove that he doesn't have stamina to start all year."

*knocks on wood*

Anyway, to say the Yankees or most other teams will not make the worlds series, is a little silly IMO before spring training. If you tell me the Pirates aren't going to the WS, I'm fine with that. But not a time that has a potentially dominating rotation with a better than average lineup.

The Cubs play in the NL Central, the Yankees play in the AL East. The Cubs won the division last year and the 2009 Cubs are probably marginally better than the 2008 Cubs. The Yankees didn't even make the playoffs last year and the 2009 Yankees are probably marginally better than the 2009 Yankees. Not to mention that every team in the NL Cantral got worse aside from the Cubs, while the same can't be said for the AL East. The Yankees are not going to the World Series.
