I don't see it happening either, but there have been rumors that the Cards were one of the teams that checked in on him before the deadline.
This is just a bizarrely timed trade given that they're still in the WC hunt. Seems like something else is coming.

It's more interestingly timed from a roster move perspective which sets off my 'its part of a well constructed plan' thinking. Hell, it could be a head fake to get Cubs or Brewers to react and carelessly overspend. No clue
Cards do have young arms in system to call up but they traditionally introduce those arms in bullpen - even in playoff situations

They already traded one of their young up-and-comers to Seattle when they shipped Marco Gonzalez over there in July for O'Neill, so it's just odd to me that the Cards are willing to let controllable pitching go with Lynn gone after this season, Reyes and Rosenthal rehabbing from TJS, and Wainwright being old/bad and only signed through 2018.

Unless you guys think they're really chem trailing it, Ace has posted some tweets where Mozeliak is basically conceding the season.

They dumped a meh pitcher and freed up cash for a big FA acquisition in the offseason. I loathe to admit it, but I like the move if I'm a Cardinals fan.

Simply having a difficult time believing that they're waving the white flag while being in striking distance of a playoff spot

I mean, he was barely over a league-average pitcher by fWAR in his time with the Cardinals. This isn't crippling their chances this year.

Leake isn't a great pitcher but he's more reliable than a rookie and my understanding is that he still provided value from a $ perspective.

Not enough to miss an opportunity to dump the contract and free up money for next year. I'm the last one to congratulate the Cardinals for anything, but this is twice that Mozeliak used Dipoto as his dakimakura this year.

Yeah, Di Poto is looking like a huge sucker over these past few years. I still don't understand the Taijuan Walker deal or his trades for mediocre arms like Karns, Gallardo, etc. He's just added Leake to his vast collection of stiffs.

I remember when Dipoto was the next big GM.
