Bullpen
I honestly think Theriot is a good defensive SS. He's not flashy and has average range, but he generally makes all the routine plays and even some difficult ones. I can't complain about him at all.

Soriano on the other hand is a butcher. He's not even fast anymore, so he can't make up for his terrible routes. He also plays way too deep. The only thing he has going for him is his arm. Overall he's a disaster.

I'm not saying either have been good, my point was that the bullpen has shown improvement and the offense hasn't and it's about a 100% sure thing the defense will suck all year.

The D looked pretty good last night. Did you see that play The Riot made in the hole? And it was good to see Geo come in and throw out the Braves new speedster without even being warmed up. And yeah, I thought he WAS out.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
One good game defensively and a couple of good plays doesn't negate the fact that the Cubs everyday lineup, when healthy, is clearly in bottom tier of defensive clubs out there. If they hit like they should, it probably wouldn't matter, but their bats currently aren't making up for any defensive miscues.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

So when healthy, where are the holes? Bradley has been pretty good in right, Soriano makes up for his bad routes with speed and a great arm, Theriot and Fontenot are good up the middle. If Soto's shoulder would heal up he'd be able to throw out more runners, and he still calls a good game, DLee is great at first Reed/Fuk play great in Center/A-Ram is pretty good as far as third basemen go and he makes up for any miscues he has.

I think you were making your "the defense sucks argument" based on two plays from two days ago. [hoping that the stats back up my argument, too lazy to check]
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Their 9th in the league in fielding percentage, so if your argument is that they are average then I guess you'd be right if you go by fielding percentage. I would argue that Fuk/Johnson aren't the greatest CF combo, but they've played well this year.

Very interesting to note is that our pitchers have committed a curiously large amount of errors. 12 out of 32 errors have been committed by pitchers and Lilly is tied for the team lead with 4.

I agree with you on Theriot although it's only fair to note his weak arm as well.

Fontenot is a decent all around second baseman, but I've been very impressed with how quickly and smoothly he can turn a double play.

Soriano is fast still.... but he doesn't utilize his speed in the field. He hesitates too much and just doesn't read the ball well. It seems like he is ALWAYS afraid of running into an infielder too on those bloops.

The holes are all over. Soriano in LF. Theriot at SS. Fontenot at 2B. Fuk is a good OFer, but he should be in RF, he's only average in CF. Up the middle, we're one of the weakest teams I can think of. Overall, this team is clearly in the lower tier of defensive clubs out there.

Also, I can't fathom how anyone could think Theriot is good at SS, he's not. He's a 2B playing SS. He has no range, no arm, and makes stupid decisions frequently. I don't know how anyone could see it any other way.

Theriot is an average shortstop and a better than average defender.

Theriot has made some surprisingly nice plays this year, last night was maybe the best I've seen him defensively ever. I've also never understood the weak arm thing, his arm seems fine to me, yeah he doesn't have the rocket Shawon Dunston arm but its not like he lollipops it there either.

I do think his range is a bit poor, he dives on a lot of plays he shouldn't have to and ends up allowing too many infield singles, I know the Cubs worked with him on not diving as much this year if he doesn't have to. I also agree he is a terrible decision maker.

Overall I don't think he is much worse than average though. If he wasn't a dumbass he would be a real good player in every asepct, but he is.

Theriot is pretty average at SS with a very below average arm. But yeah, his problem is his head not his ability.

No, I think he is a better than average fielder, as a 2B. He's overmatched at SS though and he's a bonehead.

Theriot's fine at SS, Soriano is pathetic anywhere defensively, and Fukudome's been superb in center and right. Our defense has been alright, certainly not the problem.

Theriot reminds me of Eckstein defensively. I don't know why.

Cause they're the same, both should be 2B.

Well, Eckstein was a good enough SS to win two WS. Just sayin'

Rotoworld on Angel Guzman:
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Guzman has not allowed a run in his last 13.2 innings.
Spin:
With Carlos Marmol struggling badly with his control, it's conceivable that Guzman could surpass him as the next in line to close should Kevin Gregg get hurt. Guzman is pitching well, but has also benefited from a .211 BABIP. But any correction would not be all that severe given his excellent command and ability to keep the ball on the ground.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
