Could be Stevens.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
And sadly, regardless of who we call up, they will most likely suck too.

Good, he should have been there all along.

Fox got his 2 outings for the season. Just long enough to get DL'd and paid for another year. I'm sure his agent is on the phone with Hendry now looking to tie up the 2010 season. It's gotta go something like this:

Agent: "Hey Jim, I'm calling about Chad."
Hendry: "Yeah, he gave us some tough innings this season. Well, it was a tough out he got before we put him on the DL. Lou doesn't understand our agreement."
Agent: "About that. We looked at the books and realized that he'll need one more season of sitting on the DL to get his grandchildren's college paid for. You know how the economy's been."
Hendry: "Consider it done. We'll finish it up in January."
I got nothin'.

Sadly, I can't think of any other scenario that explains what has happened with Chad Fox the last few years.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Left-hander Sean Marshall has pitched well enough to deserve to keep his job in the starting rotation, but Piniella said the continued problems with the bullpen -- including lefty Neal Cotts' struggles -- might mean Marshall gets moved to the bullpen when Carlos Zambrano returns from the disabled list, possibly as soon as eight days from now.

''When we get Zambrano back, now we've got Wells and we've got Marshall to look at, and then we'll have to make a decision,'' said Piniella, also referring to right-hander Randy Wells, who's filling in for Zambrano in the rotation. ''I like the way Wells throws the ball, so he'll be staying. So it's just a matter of where.''<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Interesting. It also would seem to verify that Lou's really the one making these calls as we figured.

Cubs bullpen stats: 4-6, 5.40 era, 8-of-13 saves, 90.0 IP, 10 hr, 64 BB*, 92 K -- * worst in baseball
Cubs starter stats: 138-8, 4.22 era, 185.2 IP, 27 hr, 70 BB, 171 K* -- * best in baseball

See where there may be an issue?

Half the problem with the pen has been Lou's managment of it though too. He keeps setting people up to fail, time after time. Plus, we haven't had the 7 best arms out there yet either, also Lou's doing.

Here's what he should do: Use Gregg in the 9th only. Use Marmol in the 7th or 8th only. Use Guzman in a similar fashion as Marmol. Heilman pitches the 6th and/or 7th. Cotts only gets to face 2-3 batters, max. Ascanio is long relief. Patton gets mop up duty. If he strictly sticks to that, I'll bet Santo's toupee that the bullpen will A-OK.

Also, when Zambrano comes back, Marshall does not go to the fucking pen and Wells does not stay in the rotation. Wells goes back to Des Moines and Marshall stays were he's at.

A month ago I would have said this was stupid, but now I'm not so sure. We can't win with a bullpen THIS bad. Right now we have 3 pitchers (Marmol, Gregg, Guzman) we can use. Everyone else is a garbage time reliever that can't get outs and walks a million guys.

If we put Marshall in the pen, get Heilman back on track somehow and get some good innings from Ascanio then hopefully things will fall back into place.

One thing is for sure, Cotts and Snowman need to be off the roster as soon as possible. Fox took care of things for us himself at least.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Randy Wells knows no matter what happens Friday in his second start, he still will be on the team when Carlos Zambrano returns from the disabled list next week.

Manager Lou Piniella has said Wells either will remain in the rotation or move to the bullpen.

"It's comforting, but at the same time, I don't want to take any edge off," Wells said. "I'm not going to look at it as if I pitch badly Friday or don't have a good start that I'm still going to be here. I'm pitching every day like it's my last day and I'm fighting for a job.

"That's the only way I know how to pitch. I've spent too many years in the minor leagues to get comfortable anywhere. It's nice Lou has confidence in me and would come out and say something like that, but that's not the way I'm approaching it because I know he can flip the switch any time. I've seen it."<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Love it. This team's got more fire than I can remember a Cubs team having. It's a hungry team, and it's become much more so with the additions of Freel, Scales, Wells, and of course Milton in the offseason.

He should go to the pen and Patton should head back to Colorado (more like Modesto).
