Bullpen
I think the pen is going to get a little shake-up. That's how Lou always works early in the year anyway: he seems to spend a month or so seeing who he likes before the roles become solidified.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

Trib article suggests the Cubs may bring Samardzija up to be the 5th starter, move Marshall to the pen to be the lefty and cut Cotts loose if this lasts much longer.

QUOTE Samardzija pitched six one-hit innings on Saturday, and appears to be back to the old Samardzija after a rough spring in Arizona. If Neal Cotts continues to struggle, the Cubs could bring up Samardzija as a starter and make Sean Marshall the left-hander in the bullpen.

Marshall has made only one start and hasn’t gotten a chance to prove himself as a starter. But the Cubs know Marshall will do whatever’s best for the team, even if it means going back to the bullpen for a while. It’s all up to Cotts at this point. He’s looked nervous on the mound ever since manager Lou Piniella sent Larry Rothschild out to yank him in Milwaukee, claiming he wanted to “change the karma.”

That last statement is so ridiculous. Cotts has looked like shit ever since he put on the uniform, and actually going back to his Sox days. It's idiotic that some writers would imply that Lou asking Larry to make a pitching change would somehow cause a veteran like Cotts to perform below his abilities. Just ignorant on the writer's part. Cotts sucks, and nothing that a manager or pitching coach has done will change that.

Cut Cotts loose and bring up Waddell to see if he can do it first.

I'd rather have Marquis back and starting than have Samardzija in the rotation.

Not me, but I would prefer Marshall stay in the rotation with Spellcheck in the bullpen. Spellcheck can be a better than average reliever right now Marshall can be an average starting pitcher right now, I am not so sure about them being useful with reversed roles. And, Fuck a lefty in the pen.

Well yeah, that would be my choice too. But if the option is Marshall to the pen and Samardzija to the rotation, I'm not interested in that at all.

QUOTE Hendry got to see Jeff Samardzija throw six innings of one-hit ball Saturday in his second straight strong start. The Cubs still have not indicated whether Samardzija will be a starter or a reliever when he eventually is recalled to the big leagues.

"Jeff is stretching out fine and working on his other pitches," Hendry said. "That was really encouraging. You can always go from starting back to the pen. We're just going to try to keep him really tuned up and get him a little better. Whenever we need him, in whichever role we need, we'll get him up here."

If Samardzija were brought up to start, that would mean Sean Marshall is back in the bullpen, leaving struggling left-hander Neal Cotts as the possible odd-man out. Marshall is scheduled to make his second start Saturday in St. Louis, and will be available in the bullpen through Wednesday.

Marshall said Tuesday he expects to stay in the rotation, but would "do whatever is best for the team," a mantra he has repeated the last two years as he has swung back-and-forth from starting to relieving.

I feel bad for Marshall. he's been a great soldier and really deserves to be in the rotation. I say dump Cotts and bring up Waddell, leave Shark starting at AAA until he's really needed up here.

Shark called up tomorrow, Marshall staying in rotation, Cotts staying in pen. They'll announce who is going down tomorrow. Hmm...

Who has options on the roster? Hoff, Hill, ??? I bet we're returning Patton to Colorado.

Yeah I don't know. I'm trying to figure this out and there's not an obvious solution since like 3 sources have said "they'll announce who will go down tomorrow".

Sullivan is speculating that Vizcaino could be released, but that doesn't really make sense... he's pitched pretty well outside of ST.

And Levine is speculating that there could be a trade in the works for Vizcaino.
