QUOTE When the Cubs decided to tender Chad Gaudin a contract in December, they did so with the idea that he could easily be traded if he didn't make the roster.
But an ugly 10.26 ERA this spring ruined any chance of that, and general manager Jim Hendry bit the bullet Sunday and released the veteran in favor of keeping Rule 5 pick David Patton.
Angel Guzman also made the final cut. Jeff Samardzija and Chad Fox were optioned to Triple-A Iowa. All are right-handers.
Hendry ultimately decided that eating $1.6 million of Gaudin's $2 million contract was preferable to watching him drive manager Lou Piniella crazy with inconsistency.
"Truthfully, Gaudin didn't pitch well," Hendry said. "I think we did the right thing. The facts of the matter are the other guys just outpitched him."
Patton, 24, was low-key about the news, though he was bursting with pride inside. "This is what you devote all your time to and what I've wanted since I was a little kid," he said. "I'm excited about this, but this is just the beginning. I want to do something special."
Hendry credited the Cubs' scouts for noticing a prospect who had been overlooked in the Colorado organization.
"I applaud our scouts that stuck their necks out on a kid that was in A ball in the Cal League," Hendry said. "It was a long shot when he got here, and the kid deserves all the credit in the world for pitching himself [onto the roster]."

Are you actually implying that Harden has been a disappointment as a Cub? Granted he's had injury issues inthe past and some mediocre spring starts, but his numbers have been absurdly good in pretty much every regular season start as a Cub.

Yeah, but then we got swept in the playoffs and Harden didn't help. I'm not saying I agree that it's been worthless, just saying you could make that argument.

Harden had the best start of all three games, and it was falters of Dempster and the defense behind Zambrano that killed the pitching staff, not him. Harden did all he could. If anyone could be blamed more, it's Lou for not having Lilly go game 3, but that's beside the point.
I hate my pretentious sounding username too.

Eh, Zambrano had the best start, just sayin. Harden was pretty bad himself. Got smacked around right away and the series officially felt over.

I hope Lou doesn't tax Z too much tonight, and gives the pen a good workout. Let everyone get their butterflies out at once.
We just need a big offensive game...not easy against the head hillbilly from Mississippi (Oswalt), but doable.

Gregg is going to be traded or released by Memorial Day.
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.

Sadly no one will give us anything for him and he's costing us several mil. My hatred for Gregg is off the fucking charts right now. Can anyone seriously imagine this guy pitching well in a big game situation or even the playoffs? I can't, and he shouldn't be closing anywhere but the minors or Mexico.

Yeah Lou needs to knock this shit off and give Marmol the closers job. Knowing we have the 9th inning locked down is a huge luxury. Sure big situations come up in the 7th and 8th too, but he can't do everything. I just want the 9th inning taken care of. Heilman and Gregg will be able to do a serviceable job in the setup roles and maybe in July we can add a bullpen piece.

Gregg is fucking awful, but if you don't want him pitching in the 9th with the bases empty, why in the hell would you want him anywhere near the 7th or 8th innings? We're stuck with him as our closer. The only guy that Lou can trust in our pen is Marmol, and he's going to use him wherever he's needed most. Maybe he'll get more save opportunities than he did last year, but I can't imagine Lou moving him out of the setup role entirely.

Gregg has been a good reliever for 3 straight years, he isn't this bad, he is gonna be fine. He isn't dominant by any means, but I think he would be ok in a shared setup role.

I agree with Fella.
I've hated Gregg from the get-go, but only because I feel that Jim said to himself, (like ruby), "Eh, Gregg, Kerry Wood...no difference. Might as well save a couple mil."
But logically, I know that he's been a pretty decent reliever in the recent past. Nobody could be this bad. Relievers tend to be streaky. Hopefully, he'll settle down soon.
I think he will.

Despite the fact that I believe Gregg will turn it around, I think the Cubs will end up dealing for a reliever at the deadline. I'm wondering if they can get a Peavy deal worked out to include Heath Bell or at least get Bell by himself if anything.
I guess we'll have to see how teams start filtering out before we can think of too many candidates.
