I only saw Patton pitch one inning this spring, yesterday in NY, but I was less than impressed. Either a trade fell through, or Gaudin refused to go on the DL.

So Shark's the 6th starter(right?) and will be called up when Harden goes on the DL next week. Heilman's the #2 setup man, the 7th inning guy, and I doubt they're going to bother with Guzman as a starter again. Plus did he even throw more than 2 innings in an appearance all spring?

Also, I would much rather see vizcaino go than Gaudin. Gaudin has actually come close to 200 innings in a season as a league average starter for 2 mil, this entire thing seems stupid to me.

The silver lining to this is that the Cubs seemingly still have some pamjor league pitching depth. I remember the days when we couldn't have a solid 6 pitching staff.

It does suck considering the DeRosa deal did not bring much and it was to save money. I think the Cubs had a bigger problem wanting to deal with telling Derosa he wouldn't be starting after two great seasons.

Pattons delivery really bothers me. Guzman can get hurt very easily at any time. I know he had a little run in 2007 but I don't like a guy who is a very solid command guy in the minors and really struggles in the majors.

What I don't get... do they really believe he's better than Gaudin is? I mean unbelievable spring and Gaudin was god awful, but this guy's never pitched above A ball and Gaudin's been a proven, solid pitcher in the bigs since 2003, that can start or relieve. That's valuable, especially on our team. He's also just 1 year older than Patton. Like you and Savant said, must be something else we're not aware of because it makes little to no sense to me and I'll be very surprised if we don't end up regretting it for baseball reasons, and it obviously sucks financially too.

Basically. Weren't we told that DeRosa and his $5 million dollar contract were traded to make room for Bradley? So, we trade DeRosa and his $5M. We sign Miles for $5M (over two years) -- so we've saved $2.5 million by trading DeRosa. Now we drop Gaudin and basically light $2M on fire. So we saved $500,000 by trading DeRosa.

I know that isn't a linear calculation, but it still pisses me off.

Butch, I was under the impression that the Cubs have said we traded DeRosa to get more left handed in the lineup. 2nd was the only position that they would be able to do this.

I'm talking about at second base, that we'll be happy about Fontenot getting more at bats. I agree we'll miss DeRosa's versatility.

I don't think Patton will have a single good outing for us once the season starts. I know Gaudin had a shitty spring, but at least he has a track record. Patton is well on his way toward becoming the next Cliff Bartosh. Good job, Jim.
