The 3 Stooges
#1
Sean Penn is going slapstick.

The studio MGM says the double Oscar winner has signed on to play Larry in the Farrelly brothers' big-screen update of "The Three Stooges."

Jim Carrey was "in negotiations" for the role of Curly, said MGM spokesman Grey Munford. The studio first featured the stooges in a series of shorts and features beginning in 1933.

Munford would not confirm reports that Benicio Del Toro will play Moe.

He said said filming begins this fall on the comedy, which is expected to be released in 2010.

The casting of a serious actor like Penn in the assuredly goofy comedy isn't such a stretch: The actor launched his storied career as goofball Jeff Spicoli in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."

So, not a single diminutive Jew in the cast? And why exactly does this need to be given the full length movie treatment? I could see a biopic on these guys, because their lives were quite interesting, but a slapstick comedy loosely based on the old shorts? Completely unnecessary.

I'd pay to see those guys play the Stooges though. Carrey and Penn are both known for really getting into their roles.
Del Toro seems like an odd choice. Perhaps someone can suggest an alternative.

but this is the farrely brothers. i can picture them making a movie where the stooges are alive in present times, kind of like "the brady bunch" movies. could be funny.

having said that, i never never liked the stooges. never found them the slightest bit funny.

The first Brady Bunch movie was pretty funny, but the joke got old and stale after that. The thing with that idea was that the original show was already unintentionally funny, and the movie capitalized on that, while the Stooges clearly are a different animal. Anyway, the Farrellys have been hit or miss since Mary IMO, so my expectations are extremely low. As far as a great cast somehow saving a bad idea, I can think of several movies with unbelievable casts that turned out to be massive piles of poop.

And yeah, the Stooges are one of the more overrated comedians in history, and the slapstick is way overdone, but I can't deny that they made me chuckle from time to time as a younger man. They just don't hold up, the older you get.

if it wasn't the farrelly bros, with that supposed cast, i would think this was going to be a more serious movie, ala man on the moon. i've heard nothing but gripes about the idea and the casting but i thought del toro and penn would be great in these roles, not sure about carrey but maybe the other two would elevate his performance. i'm not a stooges fan either but i'll give this one a chance based on the actors. if it's a normal farrelly slapstick homage thing though, i don't see it working
Life is a bitch, but she's totally doable.

Just to be the contrarian here (or perhaps the voice of reason), I do think slapstick is funny. Very, very funny. Not as screamingly funny as I thought when I was a kid, but still.
And how can you not like Curly?

Oh, I totally agree. I don't have a problem with the Stooges in general, but they just don't do it for me like when I was a kid. They aren't my favorite or anything, but I'm not a hater. I still prefer dry humor to physical humor, but I'm not a snob about it or anything.

The Stooges filmed their show with just one camera. That's pretty amazing when you think about it.

I'm guessing you watched the Saturday Night Stooge Marathons on KPLR as a kid too.

When I was a little kid, I was actually a little scared of Moe.
He seemed pretty fucking mean.

Whenever he did his Hitler routine, I was frightened as a small boy. Seriously.
