Beatles' Catalog Re-Mastered
#16
I went through a big Beatles phase when I was probably a freshman in high school. My mom had all of their albums on vinyl (which I've inherited) and I spent a bunch of time dubbing them onto tapes so I could listen to them on my walkman. At that age, I really liked their mainstream, poppy stuff. I still really like the Beatles, but now I'm way more into their trippy experimental stuff.

the trippy experimental stuff is the best. i have a hard time listening to a lot of their earlier stuff, especially anything before "rubber soul."

a hard days night and help are great albums even though they're "poppy" and the lyrical content is still mostly about love and chasing chicks.

a hard days night is almost all lennon too...

Don't get me wrong -- I still like the poppy stuff. Just not as much as I used to. And Revolver is one of my all-time favorite albums.

Just like to add one thing.

Sgt. Peppers is like art. A lot of musicians(past and present) refer to it as art. That's how groundbreaking/amazing that album was. Nothing will come as close to doing what that album did for music ever again.

To me Sgt Peppers did more for the recording process than it did for the actual music.

I love Sgt Peppers, don't get me wrong, I just think it's slightly overrated as an album...then again, i didn't live in the 60s and listen to it for the first time which according to many people I've talked to was an experience they'll never forget.

"sgt peppers" is one of my least favorite albums. vastly overrated in my book, with the exception of "a day in the life" which is one of my all time favorite songs. like phan, i don't hate the album, i just like a lot of others better.

for me, "abbey road" is as good as it gets as far the beatles are concerned. i love george harrisons work and "something" and "here comes the sun" are amazing songs. the two medleys on the second side are amazing as well.

wow, thats very similar to mine:

1. abbey road
2. magical mystery tour
3. revolver
4. the white album
5. rubber soul

if "the white album" would have been one record with a lot of the fat trimmed off, it would be #1 or #2. too many weak songs bring it down for me.

Tom, that's exactly my take on The White Album; there are some great songs, some OK-but-kinda-cool quirky songs...and some downright BAD ones. Their producer, George Martin, desperately tried to convince them to trim the fat, and make it a kick-ass single album, but the Beatles were too powerful by then to heed anyone else's opinion.

My top 5:
1. Rubber Soul
2. Abbey Road
3. Sgt. Pepper
4. Help (British, original version)
5. Beatles for Sale

Number 5 may seem odd, but unlike you guys, I love that early Beatle "sound" of Chuck Berry-meets-the-Everly Brothers, and this album meets at the crossroads of when they started to turn the corner as songwriters, yet still had that early rock n' roll-plus-vocal harmony blend. I also think Revolver is overrated (at least to my ears...too much George; many good songs but no great ones, etc.)

Tom, you mentioned Magical Mystery Tour, which is a great album too. But it should be noted that 2 of that album's prominent songs (Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever) were actually songs that were recorded during the Sgt. Pepper sessions, and meant for inclusion on Sgt. Pepper. But the Beatles needed a "hit single" at the time, so they took those 2 songs off Pepper, and released them as a double-sided single. A year later they tacked them onto the Magical Mystery Tour album.

Kind of puts a new light on that age-old discussion about whether or not Pepper is "the greatest album of all-time" or not. I don't know if it is, but if it had had those 2 songs on it instead of, say, Within You Without You, and Fixing a Hole, it'd be a more interesting debate.

They're releasing this on September 9? Pfft. They should have waited one more day.

After all, September 10 is 1 after 9/09.

Good call.
As the recently arrested Doug Stone once pondered, "Why didn't I think of that?"

actullay, half of "magical mystery tour" is b-sides and singles and the other half is from a scrapped soundtrack to a movie they never released.

and if "strawberry fields" and "penny lane" would've been included on "sgt peppers", i would have liked that album a lot more.
