Sammy's Retiring
#1
That's all. I mean he pretty much was retired already.

He also said: <i>"I will calmly wait for my induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Don't I have the numbers to be inducted?"</i>

He doesn't need to get caught using roids, he got caught corking, and that's all I need to know to tell me that he'd have done anything to improve his chance of making the hall... I hope he goes down in flames with Bonds and McGwire.

Steroids are one thing, something that is pretty tricky to deal with, but a corked bat is pretty minor IMO. I mean think about pitchers, how many pitchers put a little pine tar or other sticky substances on their caps or gloves... um, pretty much all of them that have ever pitched. That type of cheating is cool because they've done it since the old days, it's charming to the baseball purist and HOF voter. A corked bat is basically the same thing, and probably less helpful. It's stupid, but it's also a stupid reason to keep someone out of the Hall.

I will never get the Sammy hatred by some Cubs fans. He was pretty much the only reason to watch the Cubs for several years. He was the most exciting player I've ever seen.
I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.

You could say he also turned around this franchise. Before Sammy came the ownership was never really concerned with fielding a winner. How many years did we sit through the lovable loser bullshit in the 80's and early 90's? He used steroids. Everyone did. So what. He was still dominant. Was he also an asshole? Yeah, but an asshole who hit 60 homers three times.

Bonds yes, McGwire NO.

And as far as Sammy goes, I've been indifferent toward him for the most part. No hate, but not as much love as most. I loved the guy for several years, but I can't forget how his time ended here. Would I be happy if he ends up in the HOF? Sure. Would I be sad if he didn't make it? Maybe just a little.

I liked Sammy for a long time, his stretch from 98 to 02 was obviously insane, but now days if you asked me my favorite moments and players from past Cubs seasons, I'm not even sure Sammy would come to mind, not sure why that is. I would think of Grace and Dawson and Sandberg and Maddux, but not Sammy.

The best thing about Grace was when he ran around on the field for the first night game in the rain. That's my Mark Grace memory.

I like Maddux and all, but I don't even think of him as a Cub. He's a Brave.

We let a huge opportunity walk away and when I think of Maddux, all I can think of is bitter regret.
