Any time you can add a real ace in his prime you do it. You can always find someone to fill in at a middle IF position and do an admirable job. Aces are hard to come by and they win you championships.
Halladay, and it isn't even close for me.

Well, to answer your question, what do smart teams do in the draft, when faced with that exact dilemma?
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

Hill is a guy who hit 2 homers last year. Halladay is, arguably, the best pitcher on planet Earth.
Yeah, I can see see Hendry's eyes lighting up at the notion of adding yet another 2nd baseman to his absurdly long list of fellows he's tried out at that position.
But come on.

Totally different. In the draft you can't draft on need because no one knows what the actual need of the team will be by the time the draftees are headed to the big leagues (if they ever even do). Aaron Hill would be able to come in right away and be a productive player in a position that has been brutal this year for the Cubs. This isn't a clear cut question at all.
The thing you need to remember is that all Cardinals fans and all White Sox fans are very bad people. It's a fact that has been scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Being a Cubs fan is the only path to rightousness and piousness. Cardinal and White Sox fans exist to be the dark, diabolical forces that oppose us. I believe Olney said if the Blue Jays are going to deal him they want a team's top two prospects, including a potential future ace. I think he also said they want 4-6 players, but I'm not sure about that. So you are correct, that might not even get Halladay, let alone both of them.

I don't think I'd be willing to part with even that. As much as I love Halladay, I don't see the reason to deplete the farm system when there are other potential holes, and possibly create new ones.

I just read Ace's article on his website about Halladay. Well-written, I must say, and kind of convinced me that we don't really need Halladay. We'd likely have to deplete the farm system to get him, and we already have a pretty solid starting five.
Plus, we'd be fighting other teams (like the Phillies and Yankees) who legitimately NEED a guy like that, so we'd have to pony up even more.
Obviously it'd be different if we were running away with the division, and were planning to avoid another playoff disaster; in that case, having a shut-down ace who can start 2 games in a 5-game series would be <i>huge</i>. But as of right now, what we need is to get healthy and score some mofoing runs.

If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy
