I read about a week ago he was topping out at about 87 MPH.

can we get the title of this thread changed to something like "we picked up Ryan".
Everytime I look at this I think we've cut him.
Fat Bastard is an immensely obese, hardly able to walk (weighing a metric ton) gardener and henchman hailing from Scotland. His extreme size endows Fat Bastard with super-human strength as exhibited by his prowess in the Sumo ring from Goldmember. This makes him a formidable enemy for Austin Powers. Fat Bastard is noted for his foul temper, his frequent flatulence, his vulgar and revolting bad manners and his unusual eating habits, which include taste for Human infants (which he calls "the other other white meat") or anything that looks like a baby, e.g. small people. Fat Bastard has been a regular at Cub games since the early 80's when he tried several times (unsuccessfully) to eat the visiting San Diego Chicken.

As Bob mentioned last night, if the Cubs were bottom feeders or several games in first place, Marmol should be sent down to work on his control. I agree Rok, Marmol's consistency worries me, but my good ness, when he's on, jeez. I really don't think you can have too much bullpen help, especially if you're overworked during a long road trip and basically fade out, then don't come back 100%, which could easily happen during this stretch.

Bob's best quote was eluding to "why in the world would anyone even swing at Marmol's pitches right now? Nobody can hit him when they DO swing, but his control has been suspect, thus swinging is stupid. You could tell he was pissed.

One of the reasons that Marmol is hard to hit is because there's so much movement on his pitches. The way he gets that is by gripping the ball in a weird manner.
When he's lost control of his pitches, why don't they instruct him to just throw a few regular-grip straight balls for strikes?

His fastball at his best was low 90s. I think he can cut it in the high 80s.

But he seems to always be able to throw a fastball for a strike on 3-0 if he has to. He could easily throw more strikes, he's just stubborn.

We better hope because it wasn't enough in Toronto.

Also, 4-5 MPH in baseball is a big gap.

I thinkt hat sometimes there's a fine line between being stubborn and over-confident. You obviously like to see the overconfidence in this case. Marmol has made batters look downright foolish at times and maybe he's a combination of both stubborn and confident by thinking nobody can hit this slider, despite it being a ball. Either way, it'd be nice if he relied on that gauranteed strike in the 2-0 or 2-1 count rather than 3-0. Didn't Maddux always say the most important pitch count was the 2-1?

It's definitely overconfidence, but it's stupid. Get ahead in the count, and then that slider is much more likely to be swung at. Nobody hits him, even his "get me over" fastball is still 94+ mph, it's not like they're going to spank it all the time. There's been a bunch of times there's a 3-1 count, he throws that fastball, the hitter is ready for it, and they still can't do anything with it. He just tries to get too fancy sometimes when he doesn't need to. It's very much like the problems Farnsworth had. He got too in love with his slider when he had a 100 mph fastball. If I had heat like that, I'd want to show it off all the time.

And he has a reputation all around the league now for being incredibly wild. Most teams are going to take a pitch or two to start the at bat against him(the smart hitters anyway). Just pump a fastball in there.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Cubs Release B.J. Ryan
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [August 5 at 4:18pm CST]
B.J. Ryan asked for his release and the Cubs gave it to him, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. The Cubs signed him to a minor league deal last month after the Blue Jays released him. Apparently, Ryan's velocity and sharpness did not return during his brief stint in the Cubs' system.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

He isnt going to ever be an effective pitcher until he gets the velocity back. That may never happen.

Well, BJ signing turned into a low risk but no reward situation.

Hoped that BJ could have provided some support in September.

Will be pissed if he shuts it down for a few weeks and ends up on another contender this year.
