Agreed. Or Neal, for that matter.

When is Dempster due back? There is no way that Marshall takes the place of Z, Lilly, Wells, or Harden. Plus, how are we going to get Marshall stretched out? He is the only lefty in our pen right now, he is pretty valuable to us.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

He takes the place of Hart. Right now we don't have a fifth starter. I think Dempster is still out close to a month. Marshall said it would probably take him a couple of bullpen sessions to get stretched back out but that he didn't think it would take him to long.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Plus, who knows how long Harden will go before breaking down for another month. Our rotation depth isn't as great as one might think.

Unless Ryan finds the 3 mph he has allegedly lost off his heater, he's not bumping anyone to the rotation.

Yes, Cubs signed him to a minor league deal today.

To show how little of the AL I actually ever see, Ryan has always topped out at about 90-91 mph. I had just always assumed that he was a mid 90's fireballer.

Tribune reports signing of Ryan.

Limited downside and big upside. Hope that BJ can help the Cubs this year.

I agree. Cubs were .500 at the ASB in 2003, so I think there is still some hope.

LOVE this signing, needed to happen. Need another lefty in the pen, and I'd rather take a gamble one of the top 10 relievers in baseball over the last 5 years gets out of his 3 month funk, rather than bringing up Jason fuck me in the ass Waddell. Terrific gamble, and remember how the Jim Edmonds one paid off for us last year? If in 2-3 weeks he's showing no improvements, cut him, big whoop. If he's right, we get an elite reliever and finally get Marshall back in the swing role where he belongs. He needs to be starting over Hart, and we may need him to replace Harden when Dempster gets back. This is the happiest I've been about a Cubs move since the Harden trade, easily.

Ryan, it's easy to forget, was actually not bad last year. So who knows.

I agree with everything up to the final sentence.

This is a very good risk/reward signing. I still think he has something left, and even through his struggles, Ryan has been able to get lefties out. That's all I need to know.
