BJ Ryan Cut

His star has faded quite a bit.

Anyone interested? He is a lefty--albeit a struggling one.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->The Cubs are expected to make a run at former Toronto closer B.J. Ryan when he clears waivers Monday, possibly making room in the rotation for Sean Marshall.

Ryan was put on waivers with $15 million remaining on his five-year, $47 million deal, but any team that claims him would have to pay the freight. After Ryan clears waivers, he becomes a free agent, and any team can sign him for $200,000 in '09 and $400,000 in '10.

Former Toronto outfielder Reed Johnson said Ryan "would be a great fit in this clubhouse," but cautioned that several teams are likely to be interested in signing him. The risk isn't great because Toronto will be paying the bulk of his salary, and the reward is there if Ryan can regain the velocity that made him such a dominant reliever.

If the Cubs do sign Ryan, they could send him to the minors to get some work in before bringing him up to be their late-inning left-hander.

Marshall has done an outstanding job since replacing Neal Cotts in that role in May, allowing three runs in 15 2/3 innings (a 1.72 earned-run average) heading into Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader against St. Louis.

"I feel like I'm helping a lot down there as the only lefty," Marshall said. "I've been working pretty hard getting up almost every game, but I feel like my arm is in shape to continue to do that. And if they need me to step back and stretch my arm out to start, if that's what helps the team, I'll do that too."

Marshall said it probably would take him three or four bullpen sessions to get stretched out enough to return to the rotation.

Marshall said facing left-handers primarily while pitching out of the bullpen has helped with the command of his curveball. He has grown more comfortable in the late-inning role after starting the season in the rotation, and has not allowed a run at Wrigley in his last 10 outings, dating back to June 2.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I think signing BJ Ryan makes sense. It only costs you 600,000 for the next two years and even with all his struggles, he's still getting lefties out. This is a pretty low risk high reward situation.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Cubs leading pursuit for ex-Blue Jays closer B.J. Ryan

July 14, 2009
BY CHRIS DE LUCA cdeluca@suntimes.com

ST. LOUIS -- Though the Cubs might be shut out of the Roy Halladay sweepstakes, they are zeroing in on a Toronto Blue Jays pitcher. Team sources confirmed Monday the Cubs are the leading contenders for left-handed reliever B.J. Ryan, the former closer who was released Wednesday by the Blue Jays.

''He would fit in great with the guys,'' said Cubs All-Star lefty Ted Lilly, a former Blue Jays teammate of Ryan's. ''I've heard that was a possibility. It would be nice to get him back on track and pitching the way he is capable of -- which is dominating. It would be fun to watch.''

Ryan, 33, was 1-1 with a 6.53 ERA and two saves in four chances in 25 outings. Ryan cleared waivers Monday and is expected to sign with a new team later this week. The Blue Jays are on the hook for the $15 million owed Ryan for the rest of this season and all of 2010. His new team would pay only a prorated share of the major-league minimum of $400,000.

Acquiring Ryan would allow the Cubs to move lefty Sean Marshall back to the rotation, but Ryan likely would need to work himself back to form at Class AAA Iowa. He spent time on the disabled list because of shoulder tightness and scouts says his velocity has dropped and his location has been a problem. Ryan, who saved 32 games last season and a career-high 38 in 2006, has walked 17 and struck out 13.

Lilly admits it would be a gamble for the Cubs, though there wouldn't be much downside at this price.

''Hopefully, he's healthy and feeling good,'' Lilly said. ''I think it would be great to have him as a teammate.''<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Any guy named BJ is suspect in my book.
Now if his name was Cunnilingus, he's the man.
Fat Bastard is an immensely obese, hardly able to walk (weighing a metric ton) gardener and henchman hailing from Scotland. His extreme size endows Fat Bastard with super-human strength as exhibited by his prowess in the Sumo ring from Goldmember. This makes him a formidable enemy for Austin Powers. Fat Bastard is noted for his foul temper, his frequent flatulence, his vulgar and revolting bad manners and his unusual eating habits, which include taste for Human infants (which he calls "the other other white meat") or anything that looks like a baby, e.g. small people. Fat Bastard has been a regular at Cub games since the early 80's when he tried several times (unsuccessfully) to eat the visiting San Diego Chicken.

I'd prefer a more James Bond meets porn sort of name like...

"BJ Ryan" is just a nickname anyway.

His real name is Fellatio McDicksuck.

Why would we move Marshall back into the rotation? When is Dempster due back? There is no way that Marshall takes the place of Z, Lilly, Wells, or Harden. Plus, how are we going to get Marshall stretched out? He is the only lefty in our pen right now, he is pretty valuable to us.

He takes the place of Hart. Right now we don't have a fifth starter. I think Dempster is still out close to a month. Marshall said it would probably take him a couple of bullpen sessions to get stretched back out but that he didn't think it would take him to long.
