Bradley
1. Hendry signing Bradley: highly risky, and it took balls, but sometimes you gotta roll the dice.

2. Hendry signing Bradley to a 3-year deal: plain stupid, but at least Hendryites could defend it. Maybe Jim, obviously deeply mentally-challenged on matters of money, was unaware that the economy had tanked, and thought signing Dempster and Bradley for roughly double what any other team would have given them was a smart move. Or maybe Bradley promised that he would be really nice to eveyone if Jim coughed up that third year.

3. Hendry signing Bradley to an expensive 3-year deal, then during Year One, shitcanning him, throwing him under the bus, burying him in the media, and completely, thoroughly, and 100% ruining his trade value: Priceless. Classic Hendry.

#3 is so completely wrong. #3 is the only thing of those scenarios that Hendry did right.

1. Bradley threw himself under the bus.
2. Bradley buried the Cubs in the media, not the other way around.
3. I commend Hendry for having the balls to do what a lot of teams wouldn't do.

Yeah, tom's right. Hendry did what he had to do. What would you have done? Just benched Bradley? Hendry obviously saw what he was doing to the clubhouse. The people leaking all of the shit Bradley has done (fighting with Joshua, him and Lou's argument, etc.) destroyed his trade value.

That said, Hendry was a fucking idiot for giving (basically) a 3-year deal.

First things first

-I don't love Hendry
-I'd be perfectly fine with it if they fired him tomorrow.
-I don't think he is a particularly great General Manager
-I don't love Hendry

My point is that the specific arguments used against him are usually bad.

I know everyone here ( on a team message board) has more infomation available to them then Hendry does, and I know everyone here is acutely aware of what every other major league team was offering Bradley, and I know everyone here realized that the Cubs could have signed Bradley to a series of 365 single day contracts, but Hendry was too stupid to realize that and randomly threw 2 darts at a board and hit a three and a triple 10 in order to come up his contract offer to Bradley. But I'm willing to overlook that.

See I think Hendry was convinced that Ibanez, Dunn and Abreu could not play right field for the Cubs for 3 years. I still think that's true. I think Hendry thought Bradley might be a pain in the ass, but tolerable. I think he thought if he hit, people would tolerate him. I think THAT is why he signed him. I also think he gave him 3/30 because that is what the market, at that time, dictated. I think there were other teams offering similar deals. I think it's possilble, just possilbe that Hendry knew more than we do. Maybe.

that being said, the Miles deal was inexcusable.

As a side note, KB how fucking stupid do you think other GM's are? Do you honestly think if Hendry did nothing but sing the praises of Sosa and Bradley that other teams would have lined up to give us their best prospects?

How many teams has Bradley played for since his infamous meltdown at Dodger Stadium?
That many GM's.

Besides, it's not just that he poisoned Bradley throughout baseball. He also poisoned him to the Cub fans. He has a 3 year deal. We're paying no matter what. Lots and lots of money. Look at Bradley's career stats. He'll have an odd bad year, then go off on a tear for the next two or three years.

I think Jim's original idea was correct; Cub fans would put up with Milt if he hit. He didn't hit last year. Fans got pissed. So fucking what? He hits the next year. He hits the year after that. He can certainly hit, and there is certainly an adjustment period that goes along with becoming the new Chicago RFer.

Jim should have stuck to his guns.

You know what?

Milt comes back and apologizes...this thing is ancient history before the ink is dry on the next edition. Cub fans are a very forgiving lot.

The great thing about these discussions...aside from the fact that none of us were in the room...is that no one ever discusses the climate in which he was signed. There were always question marks about Bradley's psyche, but there was never any question as to whether or not he was going to get paid. The team that signed him was going to give him years and dollars. He was one of the premier FA's last year.

Making this a referendum on Hendry's performance is ridiculous. I believe the great majority of GM's would have taken the risk.

I do like Hendry. I do think he's a good GM. This was the right move at the time.

I don't think it would matter if Bradley apologized or not, if he is a Cub next year he is gonna get booed out of Wrigley the first time he steps to the plate.

You think there's a chance Milt would be be a drama-free Cub in 2010?
