It's uncomfortable talking about racism especially if it has any sort of association with you personally. We just have to remember that it's not us being ignorant biggots. Just because there's assholes out there that root for the Cubs, that does not make us and them anything alike.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I'm honestly not trying to brush this off. I'm sure that there have been racist comments made in the stands on numerous occasions. Do our or other teams' African American players have the right to be deeply hurt and comment about such things when they occur? Damn right they do. I just have a problem with anyone who comes to this team, struggles, gets booed, then tries to deflect accountability away himself by bringing up race. The world can be an ugly place, and I don't excuse that, but you'd better be very careful when you start using the word racist and start implying (directly or indirectly) that an entire fanbase either shares in such racism or at the very least condones it or looks the other way. I just haven't seen it, and I won't waste my time defending such people. What do these players expect us to do about this? You can't hold the tongues of all the morons in the world.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I think this is the root of why this gets swept under the rug. Not because it's a difficult thing to talk about (or, at least, that's not the lone reason), but because people think that if they acknowledge that it is happening, that they become guilty by association. Thus, the reaction becomes "I don't say things like that" therefore it doesn't happen.

I don't dispute for one second that this is a small number of people doing this. However, that doesn't mean it's not a real problem.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I would absolutely be more pissed about it if I actually had seen this firsthand and more than once. Am I supposed to feel guilty about such retarded behavior? It saddens me, but what exactly do you suggest we do about this?

Your point about deflecting accountability by bringing up race is a good one Rok, I suspect it's at least part of Bradley's motive for bringing this up. Although... he's not really bringing it up. Sullicock is the one that keeps asking the questions, I just wish Bradley would wise up and realize the doucebag is going to take a bad quote and slant as badley as it can be slanted. He just needs to start telling reporters no comment unless it's a game related question. I have to think his agent, his teamates, Lou, Hendry should be telling him this, right?

I think the guy has too much pride... I can't fault him though. I think the reason I defend Bradley so much is because if I were a professional athlete I think I would be just like him.

Dan said that racism isn't something that you should hint at, since it can cause all the bleacher fans to get labeled as racists. He said that the instances should be noted so that the Cubs can take action to stop the small minority that would stoop to that level.

He also said that it could be a sign of deflecting blame for a bad season.

I'm still trying to understand something here. Again, if a guy is being racist, it doesn't matter if every single person in the stands agrees with him. If he is being loud enough for a player to hear it, he must be loud enough for security to hear it, right? Especially in the bleachers. IIRC there is security in either every aisle, or every other aisle. How are they missing this?

I'm not doubting there are racist Cub fans. I am doubting that they are stupid enough to broadcast their racism in front of 40,000 people, and clever enough to avoid security while doing it.

To put it another way, I am more than happy (and very likely) to be calling Theriot a stupid fucking cocksucker in the confines of my home. But I wouldn't dream of screaming that at him while I sit in the stands.
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

Did you not see the dumbfuck that threw beer on Victorino? And that guy didn't even get caught initially, so there goes the theory that security/other fans would take care of the problem. Fans do stupid things and get away with them. I've been in the bleachers while people have said some really nasty things to the opposing players. Not racist, but sexual which can be as bad or worse IMO.

dude, because cubs security is racist. get it? the whole cub organization is racist. i know this because hawkins, jones, and bradley, three players with questionable character themselves, say so.

in fact, kid and scarey have convinced me that cub fans are racist. not white sox fans, a team from the same city, not twins fans, not rangers fans, just cub fans. i mean, i've never heard racial slurs shouted at wrigley, but if kid and scarey say it happens all the time, then who am i to argue that? cub fans are racist.

and nevermind the fact that all the players complaining about the rampant racism all did so at a time when they were shitting their beds and fans were letting them have it. nevermind the fact that if any of these players would have actually earned all the money they were given, none of this would be an issue, nevermind the fact that the most beloved player to ever wear a cub uniform is indeed black (i think he has a statue outside the park), nevermind the fact that the most popular player on the team is black, nevermind the fact that todd hundley (one of the most despised cubs ever) is white, nevermind the fact that not a single latino player has ever complained of racism. i'm convinced. cub fans are racist. i know this because a handful of ass clown worthless players, a manager who never took responsibility for a single thing he ever did wrong, and kid who as far as i know hasn't been to wrigley in years if ever, and scarey say so.

You know, up until the past few games, I was starting to warm up to Bradley, and actually got kind of excited about him having a nice rebound season next year. I really was. He finally started showing signs of being the guy we thought we were getting when we signed him. He's also stayed relatively healthy for most of the season. How typical is it that this guy will come close to playing a full season for one of the few times in his career but also will end up having arguably his worst season (statistically anyway) in several years. This is not even close to anything that anyone could have predicted in April. I'm worried now that if he's made up his mind and wants out of Chicago in the offseason that it will be nearly impossible to find a taker for his contract and the baggage that goes with him. 2010 isn't looking so hot already.
