1. Payout the top two regular season finishers. Maybe something like 40% and 20%. The 13 week season is obviously a better measure of a team than a 3 week playoff. Payout 30% and 10% to the playoff 1st and 2nd finishers.

2. Eliminate the playoffs altogether. Although this leads to the problem of bad teams not paying attention late in the season.
I don't like either of those options, at least as described there. I like having playoffs. I'm fine with having some payout based on the regular season (I suggested 50/20/10 for the playoffs, & 20 to the top regular season team), but 60% based on the regular season is nuts.

Just like actual sports leagues, winning the regular season is no guarantee of success in the playoffs and nobody remembers who has the best regular season record.

Next year, I think we should have a 6-team playoff (though, if we expanded to 12, this might be worth reconsidering) and have a payoff like that I noted above.

I pretty much agree with all of this.

in both 10 and 12 team leagues i like the 6 team playoffs. also, can someone please answer my question?

One other thought, and it follows on PCB's post above, is that if we do a 6-team playoff, I'm not sure there needs to be any payout based on the regular season. Because in a 6-team playoff, the top 2 teams only need to win 1 out of 2 games to cash in if 3 places pay. By the time the top 2 teams would play in a 6-team playoff, there would only be 4 teams left. So if they win, they play for the championship, if they lose, they play for 3rd place.
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena. [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

i agree that with a 6 team playoff there's no need for reg. season play. our pot isn't that big anyways

Another way of working it to have some guaranteed reward for the top regular season team would be to pay 4 spots:
Something like 50/25/15/10

That way the top 2 regular season teams have guaranteed payouts

(Edit to add that this isn't my preference, just that it's an option. I think just 6-team, 3 spot payout, no regular season payout is the way to go.)

i wouldn't mind a 6 spot playoffs where we only pay out the winner and runner up, but the top 3 is fine too

By the way, I know that there are 5th & 7th place games next week. Do those games affect anything next year (like draft order)? Because if so, isn't the only incentive to tank those games?

I think we should just do it where payouts go:

Regular Season gets 40%
Superbowl Champion gets 50%
Runner Up gets 10%

It's easy and it makes the regular season worth it but still keeps the lower tier teams interested for the playoffs. Runner up pretty much gets their money back plus a little.

I didn't think those games mattered, but I didn't think about it either. I'm not sure.

We have been able to make waiver claims without paying waiver money before the Sunday 12 o'clock start all year. After the 12 start you can't make any moves and have to make a bid. I know I am not the only one that has done this. It isn't like I took advantage of a glitch or cheated.

no cig, first of all to be honest i didn't remember ballrats was you. i just could have swore that since thursday games started, the waiver period started with the kickoff on thursday and we weren't able to add guys unless we did the waiver thing. i must've been wrong.

Which is why 1 and 2 should get a bye.

Next year it should be 6 teams in the playoffs as 8 is far too many in a 10 team league. 1 and 2 get byes.

I think the top points total for the year should definitely get some money (starting next year of course). Point total is a far better indicator of how good your team is than these total bullshit crapshoot playoffs.

The league I've been in forever basically splits it. Half the money goes to the top 2 or 3 points totals and half the money gets split between the super bowl contestants.

The more I think about it, the more I think that it should either be some portion of the money being awarded based on regular season or a bye. In the scenario you posted, not only would you have presumably gotten the lion's share of half the money based on having the best regular season record, but then you'd also have a major advantage in terms of the playoffs. I think being awarded a 1st round playoff bye is (and likely having the most advantageous matchup in the semifinals) is plenty of a reward for a good regular season. If we pay 3 spots, you only need 1 win in 2 games to cash in (and if we pay 4 spots, you are guaranteed to cash in).

Having it both ways is nuts. Like I said, just like in real sports leagues, the advantages of winning the regular season should be playoff positioning. They don't cut trophies in half and give half to the team with the best regular season.

I think it's also worth noting that the money in this league is far too small to divide up that way. Our total pot is $250. If you're saying the pot will be split in half first based on regular season & playoffs, and then divided up further from there, you'll have a scenario where the winner of the playoffs will get all of like $60-75 after paying $25 to be in the league.
