Cards Get Lugo, Give Up Duncan To Get Him
#1
QUOTE According to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals have acquired shortstop Julio Lugo for outfielder Chris Duncan.

I saw on Twitter somebody mentioned that LaRussa and Dave Duncan were livid over Chris Duncan possibly going somewhere, reports of them arguing with Mozeliak over it. I didn't think it would take giving up somebody like Duncan to do a Lugo deal. He's been shit the last 2 years, but it's possible playing defense also went to his head with how atrocious he is out there. Maybe he gets it together in the AL.

I'm glad we don't have to see Duncan's ugly mug. I hope this causes his old man to leave the Tards.

I'm not sure that it makes the Cardinals any better. So I'm all for it.

Yep, especially head to head with us. Duncan sucks, but he had some big hits against us.

Let's see if you are the Cards and are able to get a possibly a serviceable SS for a year and half without paying a dime of his contract for a current AAA player, why wouldn't you do it?

According to ESPN:

Lugo signed a four-year, $36 million free-agent contract with the Red Sox before the 2007 season. Sources told the Boston Herald that the Red Sox will still pay the remaining $13.5 million on his contract, but they at least get something in return for cutting him lose. Duncan, sources told the newspaper, will be assigned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

It's a fine addition, but they're talking about him being the starting SS. I think they're better off just going with Brendan Ryan there, but we'll see. They could use depth at the position at least. It is the Cards we're talking about though, watch him hit like .350 these last 2 months.

There's a reason why, even with Lowrie hurt, he wasn't playing.

He'll instantly hit .330 and play GG defense for the Cardinals. That is exactly how I expect this to pan out.

By all accounts, the guy has become a friggin statue in the field. If the cards want to give the starting SS job to a player that is the equivalent of Rodin's "The Thinker," I'm all for it.

The risky investment here has nothing to do with money but with playing time and roster space. When Dusty was here everyone was hell-bent for leather to run him out of town when he played Neifi Perez and Todd Hollandsworth over Ronny Cedeno and Matt Murton. Why? Because they were costing the Cubs runs, no matter how cheaply they were being paid, no matter if they enjoyed some success in the past. Of course, in retrospect, the difference between Perez/Hollandsworth and Cedeno/Murton looks to be that of the difference between eating worms and eating worms covered in Fun Dip, but hell, I'll take that little sweet kick to wash down the crap.

Who knows, maybe he'll rebound from a series of debilitating injuries to become a good fielder again. Like Jody suggested, that's Cubs/Cards luck. But I prefer to take stock in the words of my dear friend T-Bird: "There ain't no comin' back. This is the really real world. There ain't no coming back."

Incidentally, anyone else notice that the Spoonerism of "Ben Maller" is "men baller"? Snoogans.

QUOTE The St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland Athletics have been talking about a possible swap of All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday and top prospect Brett Wallace, according to sources, and one person familiar with the talks places the odds of a deal at 50-50.

I wouldn't care for that deal at all. Nope. Not one bit.

Holliday has been pretty average this season though, but maybe that's just because he's away from Coors.

Don't get me wrong, it would suck, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.
