I'm gonna let you guys in on a secret

I love the song when I'm at Wrigley. I'll sing along with it.

But out of context (away from Wrigley), I'm not a huge fan.

It should be Sinatra and "My kind of Town, Chicago"
Fat Bastard is an immensely obese, hardly able to walk (weighing a metric ton) gardener and henchman hailing from Scotland. His extreme size endows Fat Bastard with super-human strength as exhibited by his prowess in the Sumo ring from Goldmember. This makes him a formidable enemy for Austin Powers. Fat Bastard is noted for his foul temper, his frequent flatulence, his vulgar and revolting bad manners and his unusual eating habits, which include taste for Human infants (which he calls "the other other white meat") or anything that looks like a baby, e.g. small people. Fat Bastard has been a regular at Cub games since the early 80's when he tried several times (unsuccessfully) to eat the visiting San Diego Chicken.

It's by no means a great song and the "gonna win today" part is weird in the context, but I think the tradition is very cool actually. The song makes me happy, even though it's pretty hokey.

Also, I love that we don't do "god bless america" in the 7th inning, sorry if that makes me a dick. I just really don't get that. Why do so many teams do that now?? It's a baseball game, sing take me out to the ballgame. Do we do it on holidays or sundays still? Holidays I get it, that's fine, but normally, it's so weird to me. It's a baseball game.

I think I love you Sheps. Perfectly said. So awkward at Dodger Stadium when they take 5 to sing GBA.

Exactly, it's strange there. It just feels out of context for me and a little forced. The anthem does the job in my mind, it's not a nationalistic event and we're not North Korea, take me out to the ballgame is fine if it's not the 4th or memorial day or the like. Plus if it's the 7th and I'm trying to get one last beer before the cutoff, I don't want to feel like a douche because I'm ignoring GBA.

Exactly.
Then you get those fans who use it as the queue to beat the traffic. You'd be surprised how many more fans can squeeze out of an aisle during an extra long half inning.

At Petco Park, I find it odd when they honor the Marines with the Marine song/anthem/battlecry/whatever. I'm all for the military and all, but at some point, that standing ovation gets played, especially during the fourth inning, when the Padres are getting raped.

I always loved when they played "Get Down Tonight" after wins. I don't really remember when they stopped, but that was one of my favorite memories of Cubs games when I was little.

The lyrics have always kind of bugged me for after the game, but I think it's a fun song and I've always enjoyed it, if not just for the fact it's a cool song for a Cubs fan.
The thing you need to remember is that all Cardinals fans and all White Sox fans are very bad people. It's a fact that has been scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Being a Cubs fan is the only path to rightousness and piousness. Cardinal and White Sox fans exist to be the dark, diabolical forces that oppose us. They are the yin to our yang, the Joker to our Batman, the demon to our angel, the insurgence to our freedom, the oil to our water, the club to our baby seal. Their happiness occurs only in direct conflict with everything that is pure and good in this world.

The lyrics to GCG only truly make sense on opening day. Any song that is sung by 40,000 people sounds great though. I love watching videos on YouTube of Sweet Caroline at Fenway. That kind of mass singing gives me chills. Very European.

all team songs suck. that's really not the point. i have no problem with them playing that song after wins. it's easy to sing along with, it's positive, it makes people happy. how is that a bad thing?

I really had a special feeling the first time they played that song when I was at a game. There's something nice about a bunch of fans singing that song together after the game ends. Do I have the song on my Ipod? Of course not. But that's not the point.

I grew up with his music and saw him perform several times.

There's nothing great about that song at all...but it's from the heart form a die-hard fan and I'm very happy to hear it after each win.
Oh I love when it's played, because that means we won. I would love listening to Fran Drescher sing a Backstreet Boys song at the end of the game if that meant we won.

Yep. It's not going to be on my iPhone, but when I hear it on TV, it's great.

I agree.
I will always remember watching everyone sing it after A-Ram hit the bomb to beat the Brewers in 2007.

Okay, the song is a bit hokey. My 3 year old daughter loves it and it that alone is enough to bring me joy.

And if you don't like it, you're a douche.

I was going to start a similar topic (must be cuz we're hearing it more often). I HATE that this is our song. Goodman was capable of so much better. His "Dying Cub Fan's Last Request" is wonderful and more fitting with Cub fandom, but not exactly a sing-along victory celebrator.
