ESPN: Z to go on 15 day DL
#1
That sucks.

The only guy from last years starting 5 who hasn't gone on the DL this year turns out to be an All Star for another team.

Z - possible second DL trip
Dempster - recently from DL
Lilly - on DL
Harden - Returned from DL in June
Marquis - Traded

Jason there is a trend here so maybe you should think about a 15 day vacation.

You could make a case that Marshall belongs on the list but he only had 9 starts last year and I prefer not to jinx him.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->DENVER -- The Cubs will place pitcher Carlos Zambrano on the disabled list with recurring spasms in his back, and it is not clear how long he will be missing but he will miss at least one more start.

The Cubs can backdate the DL to the last time he pitched -- Aug. 1 in Florida when he left the game after three innings with the back problem. Therefore, he would be eligible to come off the DL on Aug. 17.

He warmed up for, but never appeared in, Friday's game against the Rockies after experiencing more pain and was sent home to Chicago for an MRI and examination. Results were not immediately know but the Cubs feel it is serious enough to place him on the DL for the second time this season. His first stint was for a pulled hamstring while sprinting to first base to beat out a hit.

The Cubs are expected to recall reliever Jeff Stevens from Iowa to take Zambrano's roster spot. The Cubs need relievers after Sean Marshall was forced into a two-inning start Friday and Jeff Samardzija followed with four innings. Samardzija, who started in the minors this season, could take Zambrano's Wednesday start.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I like Kap, but everything about this article is absolutely foolish:

Zambrano may be the most overpaid player in the game

He's not the most overpaid player in the game, but I am starting to feel like I agree with the article.

There's a shitload of of inaccuracies in it. The big game pitcher stuff especially. 3 of his 5 playoff starts are when he was a 22-year-old in 2003. The last 2 years he's given up 4 earned runs in 12.1 IP, for a 2.98 ERA. He was our only pitcher to really step up both years.

He's won at least 13 games and had an ERA under 4 ever year for the last 6 years.
After this year, it will be his 8th straight year with an ERA under 4.
He's made at least 30 starts 6 straight years.
He has the 11th best win-loss % of active mlb pitchers and is 81st all-time.

He's been probably the most consistent pitcher in the NL as a full-time starter. He's probably never going to enter the premium ace level, but come on, the guy is as reliable as it gets.

Who cares about his act? I'm not going to be friends with any of these players. He wins games.

I like Zambrano and all, but as long as this team needs to rely on him to be one of the top 2 pitchers on the staff, I don't see this team winning in the postseason. As a regular season staff, the Cubs have a good one. As far as a postseason rotations go, every team in the NL races sans the Rockies, has a better one.

Billingsly and Kershaw are better than any 1-2 puch the Cubs have. Shit, Cook and Jimenez from the Rockies might even be too. You only need 2 pitchers in the playoffs, the Cubs don't have 2 clear cut choices to choose. Zambrano-Lilly, Lilly-Dempster, Zambrano-Harden, those combos aren't the type you win shit with.

Billingsley has a 3.73 ERA and is currently hurt. Kershaw's been great, but is a 21-year-old pitcher, who knows how he'll do in the playoffs? The rest of their rotation is blah at best.

And again, Zambrano's been very good the last 2 years. It wasn't his fault we lost either game. We did jackshit against Arizona and the defense shit the bed for him against the Dodgers. If I remember correctly, at least 1 or 2 of those runs last year should've been unearned too.

Our rotation is plenty good enough to win in the playoffs. Scoring 6 runs in 3 games won't be.

See, I don't see it that way at all. This rotation is plenty good enough to win in the regular season, they have the quality starts to show it. However, quality starts don't win playoff games, they get you 4-2 losses.

The rotation lacks a clear #1, I don't disagree with that. But the Dodgers don't have one either. We have 3 pitchers with a better ERA in our rotation than Billingsley even, and he pitches half his games at a pitcher's park. He had an 8.49 ERA last year in the playoffs too. 10 runs to the Phillies in 5 2/3, 1 run in 6 innings to us(that sums up why we're losing).

And we have 5 pitchers that are all capable of kicking ass for a month stretch. I especially think Lilly will do much better if he gets another playoff chance and I want him going game 1 or 2, as he should've been last year.

I like Kaplan on the radio, but he is NOT a journalist, and just like most Cubs fans, knows very little about baseball. That article is an embarrassment.

Don't get me wrong, no player on this team frustrates me more than Z, but the man produces. He may not be a true #1, but he's damn close. When Wood and Prior were both studs in our rotation, no one was complaining about Z. It's not his fault that Hendry crowned him the ace when maybe he wasn't the right guy to carry the mantel.
