Cubs Commitments - A look ahead

QUOTE (BackyardLegend @ Aug 11 2009, 09:33 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>The Cubs need to Magglio Ordonez/Carlos Lee (Sox pre-2005) themselves of one of those OF contracts. Preferably Soriano. However I doubt anyone is going to take on any of that salary.

The MLB is shifting a bit in that it's more important to grow your own talent. Players are breaking down at an earlier age, and because of that it's not wise to invest in monster free agent contracts. I don't mean to say that the era of A-Rod contracts is over, but teams are going to need find those studs in there own system. Not to mention, if players are becoming more an more fragile, teams may be less apt to take a plunge with an older FA. We may see more Bobby Abreu type deals.

Also, I don't want to have another relapse like we had in 2005-2006 where we really faltered for a few years because we didn't have enough depth in the organization. Of course we can't win 90+ games every year, but we need to make sure we have talent coming up through both the pipeline and the hot stove to ensure that we are (1) competitive and/or (2) making continual progress. I.E. Boston Red Sox/LA Dodgers.

Just my 2¢ for now.
The Sox didn't win because they got rid of those two, they won because their pitching was outstanding in 2005. Podsednik and Rowand both had sub .740 OPSs.

If the option is Soriano in LF or someone who is going to OPS .740 it is a no brainer decision.

Well we have the best of both worlds. We have Soriano in LF and his OPS is .746.

If we had DeRosa clogging up our bench we'd have never given Jake Fox a chance to blossom.

So add that to the argument. Jim Hendry got rid of DeRosa to make more playing time for Jake Fox, who will eventually be an inexpensive 1B solution. Three Cheers for the wizardry of Jim Hendry.

The following list make me want to vomit. The worst part is that our major commitments are not to any of the top tiered talent in the league. It will probably be a while until we contend again unless Ricketts throws money at the problem. We have more than twice the dollars committed in each year than any other Central division team.

Cubs Commitments compared to other NL Teams. (Central team bolded)

2010
Cubs -- 122 M
Phillies -- 96 M
Mets -- 92 M

Rockies -- 41 M
Brewers -- 39 M
Dbacks -- 32 M

Pirates -- 23 M

But what if you have twice the revenue base of most of the other teams in the NL Central?

Unless your an owner, the amount of money your team makes really doesn't matter unless it affects your ability to attract and pay for talent.

If we had Pujols, Beltran, Johan, Haren, and Teixeira signed with that money I agree. but since we've spent it on much worse I disagree, VEHEMENTLY!

You fail to understand that I am not against spending money. I am against spending the way Jim Hendry has spent it.

And there is no way we have twice the revenue stream as the Cardinals now that they have a new ballpark.

Somebody needs to show that to Ricketts, so we can rid ourselves of Hendry.
