Zambrano wants trade?
#16
The stats say Zambrano is a top five pitcher in the NL. Our eyes and experience just don't feel that way. It's weird.

Oh well. I'm sure Gorzellany will shut them down now...

Can you imagine a Cubs rotation, built from within next year, that doesn't feature Harden OR Zambrano?

Sure. Not this season - over the past like 4 or 5. There was a whole big thing about it a few weeks ago.

Last 5 seasons - 3.26, 3.41, 3.95, 3.91, 3.91. Without looking it up I'd guess he isn't in the top 5 in any of those seasons, let alone all of them put together.

5th in 2006. I'd also add that a lot more than ERA determines top 5.

Yeah Z is never gonna be a super 2.5 ERA, 20 win Cy young guy, if people think he sucks because he never became that, I guess there isn't much else to say, but he is as consistent as about anybody in the league.

He has been in the top 10 in ERA five times, in the top 5 in wins three times. His active ERA is 12th best in baseball and he is among the leaders for most wins in baseball over the past 7 years.

He may freak out and do stupid stuff sometimes, but he helps us win games a lot more often than not.

I'm also guessing that he's still hurt. Not making excuses, but he's seemed to run out of gas around the 4th inning the last few starts, so that must mean something is wrong.

He'd better be. He was pretty awful today.

Z would be a great #2

I mean, he's far from a problem for this team - lord knows we have plenty of those... but is it silly to hope a guy making over $18 million a year can do better than a 3.9 ERA?

I'm also pretty sure that if a guy is, for example, 7th in the league in ERA for each of 5 straight seasons, he's probably going to be in the top five for those 5 seasons total.

Regardless, I'm quite confident that whatever the discussion that was had here and in the media a couple months/weeks/whatever ago concluded that Z has been a top 5 pitcher in the NL over the course of the last 5, 6, however many seasons. I believe it was a Kaplan article that started the whole thing.
