Did You Ever Really Recover From Last Season?

<!--quoteo(post=62492:date=Sep 10 2009, 09:13 AM:name=veryzer)-->QUOTE (veryzer @ Sep 10 2009, 09:13 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->i'm not saying i'm not excited every season, it's just that the edge is off. there's a dark cloud now at the beginning of the year and i get tired of them so much faster than i used to.

and i don't believe they'll ever win the world series which makes me question why i even bother.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Exactly. The thing is, I don't know if I'll ever be able to just sit down and enjoy a game the way I used to. I still care about the team but this is no longer fun, and until they win a championship, it all seems like excruciatingly boring and sadistic foreplay, with no payoff. This season has brought me no joy, and I can't imagine things getting any better for me if we follow this up with a series or mediocre seasons. Maybe that's what it will take for me to stop caring as much and just go back to having low expectations and just enjoying the game again. Maybe apathy would be a good thing in my Cubs life.

I was excited and ready for this season, although it never really felt like it was going to be a successful one. The August swoon coincided with some travel and other stuff for me, so it was easy to just disconnect and give up. I haven't watched a whole game (that I wasn't at) since the weekend of SOITOW and probably won't again.

Here's hoping for next year! In the meantime, go Bears

I was excited for this season but there was always kind of a taint about it like it had lost a little of its essence. It just didn't feel the same.

Last year was almost perfect except for the harsh, bitter ending.
I didnt recover.
2008 should have been great.

I personally think losing 90/95+ games is worse than a winning season and losing in the playoffs. While I'm not happy with the results, I'm more at ease than watching a dog shit team for an entire season.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

The heartbreak I suffered in '84 has never been matched. My age at the time had something to do with it, of course, but I don't think it will ever get worse than that. '03 came pretty close, though.

Yeah, I recovered from last year and I'll recover from this season soon enough. Maybe I'm still young enough at heart or dumb enough to expect something special from this club.

The issues with this season start with high expectations based on last couple of years; continue with dumb offseason moves (DeRosa trade, not signing Peavy nor a competent backup third baseman and a lefty for the bullpen); and, the Cubs offense's failure to come close to what they were able to produce so well last year.

This year's team is a team that not even its mother would love.

That actually was worse than 2003. First team to ever win the first two games in a 5 game championship series and manage to lose the next 3 (at least that's my recollection). Sutcliffe goes 16-1 in the regular season, wins the first playoff game (including hitting a homer) and then manages to have a bad game in game 5. Plus, we've got the Leon Durham ball through the legs. It was awful.
I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.

1984

My burning memory of Frye clearing his bench too soon, being in need of a pinch hitter, and only have 'f'ing Henry Cotto'. I remember it clearly, my ex-brother in law was hooting at me, I was repeatedly calling Frye a dumb sob, and banging my head repeatedly on a bar in an Oregon, WI legion hall where I was attending a 25th anniversary. I will never forget this moment, I can even tell you I was drinking a 12 oz. bottle of Miller Lite and was eating cheetos.

Yeah. I would have to agree. It was a perfect storm of heartbreak. In '84 I don't remember getting my hopes up until after game 2, and I was too young to get that emotionally involved to the point of feeling stupid for believing a championship was even a possibility. But game 6 in '03 ranks right up there as one of the worst days of my life. I didn't think it was possible to feel the range of emotions and mood swings that I experienced on that night.

I was 10 years old in '84. My dad had died about 10 months earlier and I really took solace in the Cubs' success in 1984. It was sort of a nice way to escape the fact that I was going to grow up fatherless. Of course, all of it came crashing down as I was introduced to my first case of Cubs heartbreak. Maybe that was good for me, though. I quickly learned, at an early age, that life is just a series of kicks to the groin. You just hope that you can get some recovery time between each kick.

see, in '84 i was dumb enough to think that we'd be back again. it hurt, but optimism was still a large part of my life. by '03 the harsh realities of life and being a cub fan had beaten me down. after game 6, i knew we'd lose game 7 and i knew we'd never be in this position again, or if we were, we'd blow it. things have never been the same since that night.

you know what i remember most about it? me saying, "prior is cruising, may as well let him go the distance." what a dummy i was. 5 outs people, 5 fucking outs and another game to boot, at home, with our two best pitchers going. nothing will ever top that and i'm not sure i will speak of this again.

Last year was the most enjoyable Cubs regular season I've had since 1984. This year I still check the scores and I still have hope (yes, until they're eliminated) but I just can't seem to bring myself to watch the team fumble around like idiots and blow games. I've lost my patience.
