I will be absolutely shocked if Holliday doesn't test free agency. He isn't going to give the Taints a discount for the privilege of playing in front of the "best fans in baseball." Not a chance.

The sooner the Cards get knocked out of the playoffs, the greater the chances that Holliday tests free agency IMO.

I just hope the Phillies or some team out there is up to the task.

Lots of teams thought the opposite in regards to the Cubs and Cards coming into this year. The point is there's a reason they play the games. Things aren't decided on paper. While it doesn't look very good for the Cubs right now, if they put themselves in as good a position possible, you never know.

The rebuild idea you have in your head is crazy. I'm sorry, but that's the only way it can be put. A rebuild is something small market teams do. I understand trading away players in order to improve your team in the long run, but doing that with the whole roster is not something the Cubs will or should do.

This team is too good to do a full rebuild anyway. Maybe not good enough to decisively make the playoffs, but good enough to have a possibility of making the playoffs. Also, rebuilding is not a guarantee of anything... especially anything quickly. Yes, the Marlins have had success, but look at the Pirates! They've been rebuilding for over a decade.

The part where anyone has a clue what Ricketts has planned.

It's not what he knows what Ricketts has planned. He like most everyone else here knows.... the Cubs have a shitload of money tied up in multiyear deals that also have no trade clauses in them. This team is not rebuilding and it has nothing to do with knowing what Ricketts wants to do.

Anyone think it's a coincidence that Sullivan wrote that story on the day of a Z start? He loves stirring the pot on the days Z pitches.

As cig said, I have no idea what Ricketts has planned. But, looking from the outside it seems it will be tough for him to shake up the font office on the eve of the offseason. So, I would think Hendry has at least next year left as the general manager. I find it hard to believe that he would go on the hook for 3/4 of a billion dollars without wanting to make some sort of a splash with his new team. Ricketts has been linked to Sandy Alderson, who I could see being brought in as team president but not as general manager. Maybe that will be his big splash. I just don't see how he is going to come in in his first year at the helm with a payroll well past $100 million, and say he is going to tear it down and rebuild.

I'd be fine with trading Z, but I don't think it's a priority.

Bores and Bernstein suggested (and they started with the disclaimer that it's an insane idea) that the Cubs trade Z and Lee, move Soriano to 1B get an OF maybe Damon or Crawford. Move Theriot to 2B and get a real SS. We would also get some decent level prospects in return. It's crazy, but hey, it's an idea. Discuss.

It will definitely be interesting to see what he does.

If he has a vision of how to build a winner and doesn't care about a little fan backlash, who knows what he'll do? It's his team now and he can do whatever he wants.

I'm not saying that I expect some drastic changes, but we really don't know either way.

OK, say we're trading Z this offseason. Tell me who is going to make up our 5 man rotation.

- Lilly
- Dempster
- Randy Wells

Are we bringing Harden back? Who are we going to get that is better than Zambrano? Are we getting prospects in return for Z?

Also, the list of FA SS is scarier than the SPs.

Orlando Cabrera (35)
Alex Cora (34)
Craig Counsell (39)
Bobby Crosby (30)
Adam Everett (33)
Chris Gomez (39)
Alex Gonzalez (32) - $6MM mutual option with a $500K buyout
Khalil Greene (30)
Jerry Hairston Jr. (34)
John McDonald (35)
Marco Scutaro (34)
Miguel Tejada (36)
Omar Vizquel (43)
Jack Wilson (32) - $8.4MM club option with a $600K buyout

If we are trading Z, we have to be getting a SS back. The only team that has a SS that I want, and can afford Z would be the Mets.
