I am only 28 but I've been pitching for 9 seasons in da big leagues. I luh da Cubs and I pitch good for dem. My record is 104 and 67 so I have win percentage of .608 (12th active, 89th career.) My career ERA is 3.5 (12th active.) I get angry and throw too hard some time buh I don't give up alotta hits as you see my WHIP is pretty good (1.298 24th active.) I dunno what it means, but someone tole me my adjusted ERA+ 127 which must be pretty good cause it's the 9th best out of everyone else playin right now. I make good money but I can field ok...BUT I LOVE TO HIT!!! Which I good at for a pitcher, you know? Oh, and I only 28 years ole!!! I lub my country and I luv Chicago, but I have only one regret. I never shoulda gave dat reporter Scully or Sully a noogie in front uh ebryone in like 2004 cause he did not like dat and says bad things about me now. He knows I could break him though.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Ya know BZ, you don't have a fucking clue what I want. How can you say that I want a $140M payroll for 7 players after all the bitching I've done about our future salary commitments? I would actually much rather go in the other direction and get leaner for a couple of years and build this thing the right way. I simply do not think this team can win the division as structured and unless we add significantly to the budget we can't add any talent through FA. I really do not want to watch another season of .500 with aging veterans who play with no entusiasm. Zambrano is not the first player I'd want to trade. I'd much rather trade Soriano, Fuk, or Bradley. But of the 4, Zambrano is the most likely to find a buyer. It would allow us some flexibility to address our major problems, which are defense up the middle and hitting. Starting pitching is our strength, and while Zambrano would be difficult to replace the case could be made that his downward trend in his production and increased injury risk may continue for the remainder of his contract. I don't hate Zambrano, but I do see that he has declined for 4 straight years and the innings on his pitching arm continue to add up.

The Cubs pull this shit, and I've suddenly cleared up a few hundred hours on my schedule next summer.

And how exactly would we replace both Z and Harden in one offseason? I'm convinced that Sullivan knows NOTHING about the game or the business of baseball. He should be working for Perez Hilton at this point, because all he is interested in is stirring shit up for a living.

I'm not sure, but I think he meant that you want guys like Soriano cast off (with hyperbole leading to 7 people on the roster), even if the only way that happens is we end up paying a significant portion of the salary (again, hyperbole leading to a 140M payroll including paying for players that aren't on our team).
Not very sure at all though. I was thrown off at the comment myself and that offers the best explanation IMO.

I think we ought to offer Harden arbitration. I also think there is only about a 25% chance he accepts it. We can start Marshall. We'll be bad, but we won't compete next year regardless.
The rest of you (sans Butcher) need to realize that this team cannot compete with St. Louis with or without Carlos, and the quickest way of fielding a competitive team is to remove ourselves of all the honorous obligations. Until we do that we will be a middling and maddening ballclub. Right now I am not the least bit excited about our team in 2010 because I expect to see the same group out there.
In regards to Soriano, I don't think we can trade him this offeseaon. His value is at an all time low. We should wait and see what he does in Spring Training and hope he gets off to a hot start and trade him then. Plenty of GMs may look at his knee as the reason he's sucked so bad.

If they lose Holliday and some of their starters not named Wainwright or Carpenter come back down to earth, I don't think we'll know how good the Cards will be next season. They were pretty average until they made those trades before the deadline.

And they'll probably resign someone like Smoltz or someone of the scrap heap like Penny who'll turn into a Cy Young caliber pitcher. Just saying.
Wainwright and Carpenter are two of the top 5 pitchers in the NL. Pujols is the best player in MLB. Rasmus is 22 years old and is only going to get better. They have a ton of money to spend this offseason.

That is, bar none, one of the dumbest things I've read on here in quite some time. We won 97 games last year to finish 11.5 games in front of St. Louis and have largely the same team this year. St. Louis was injured last season. We are injured this season, and have had extremely substandard years from other players. We're not 11.5 games better than a healthy St. Louis. St. Louis isn't 9.5 games better than a healthy Cubs team.
To say that we can't compete with St. Louis is just fucking stupid. It also ignores that a month and a half ago we were tied with St. Louis.
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.

We've had 5000 injuries this season and a ton of career worst seasons, so while I'm not naive enough to believe that our offense will pull a 180, it's hard to imagine that all of our position players are done, and I also don't have enough conviction to know how things will work out for any team in this crappy division. I do know this though. The Cards will not be a powerhouse without Holliday.

I hope to God they re-sign Smoltz. Are you sure Carpenter is going to be healthy again? What is going to happen when Duncan takes his pixie dust out of town? The Cardinals are in no way a lock to wni again next year.
I have no problem with trading Z if we are getting back more than we are giving up. People this is a big market ball club with a big market payroll and a new owner, there is not going to be a re-building.

I think we're a .500 team next season. I think St. Louis is a 90+ win team next season. A lot depends on whether they can resign Holliday, but I think they will sine they have so much money available and Holliday has already said he loves playing in StL. You never know with a Boras client though.
