Horror Movies I'm looking forward to this October

QUOTE (Butcher @ Oct 16 2009, 10:54 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>I saw Paranormal Activity last Thursday at the River East.

Thoughts:

- It was very effective and I got chills several times. When the girl gets out of bed the first time and just stands there staring at her boyfriend for hours as the film is sped up -- I got some serious shivers. That was really effective.

- I thought the Oujia board scene (when it lit on fire) was really the only time I felt it was a little hokey. I didn't feel it was necessary and it went more for a cheap scare.

- From the point when they put the powder on the floor, find the photo in the attic, and see the photo smashed until the end was just so tense. It worked so well because the entire movie was just a slow, methodical build. Really well done.

As an aside, I'll never understand moviegoers' desire to yell shit out at the screen. You aren't funny and you're ruining the experience for the 100 or so people surrounding you. Shut the fuck up and watch the movie. I guess when you see a midnight show in Chicago, you just have to expect that kind of thing...

you know, when you black out the spoilers, you're just tempting me to look. you ever see that episode of "ren & stimpy" where stimpy isn't allowed to press the button? well you're the guy bouncing your ass off my head. it ain't right.

I'm not blacking out anything that intriguing -- but it would spoil a few parts of the movie if you read them.

Yeah, we saw the movie at midnight a week or so ago and when she is standing right next to him while he's sleeping some guy yelled "dude's gonna get raped!". I actually thought it was kinda funny, but I normally hate it when people yell things at the theater.

See, a handful of people in the theater might think that kind of thing is funny. Most people, however, pay their $10-$12 bucks to be entertained by the film -- not by the douchebags in the theater. People who yell shit out or talk during a movie should be publicly caned.

***SPOILER BELOW***

I won't do the blackout thing so it won't tempt tom to highlight it...

The part in the film where you can see the sheets billow up and the ghost/demon is clearly climbing into the bed, some guy yells out, "DUDE JUST WANTS A THREESOME, THAT'S ALL!"

Amusing? Mildly, I suppose. But it completely takes you out of the movie and completely ruins the tension. I just don't understand the mentality of someone who goes to a crowded theater and does that kind of shit.

I liked the original "Crazies". This looks a bit different, but I think the trailer gives away far too much. It LOOKS good though.

Stephen King had a write up in Entertainment Weekly about "Carriers". He was a big fan, but didn't wan to oversell it.

Revenant looks like about 300 other movies I've already seen.
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

I liked the original Crazies the first time I watched it when I was much younger. I tried re-watching it about 10 years ago, and it just looked really dated and sort of seemed incomplete. Not a terrible film, but to me anyway, it didn't age well. It definitely inspired 28 Days Later and those types of films though (including Carriers), so I respect it a great deal for that.

I'm mildly optimistic about both of these films.

And yes, Revenant looks like a ton of other ideas re-hashed, but the spin of these guys wiping out the dregs of society has me intrigued. If the comedy works, it could be a fun picture.

Alternate ending for Paranormal Activity

Wow, thank god the director changed this (fast fwd to the final 6 minutes or so) for the theatrical version. Otherwise I would have hated the film. What a lame alternate ending.

I watched Paranormal Activity online last night and must have seen the original version, versus the one currently out in theater. The ending matched the alternate ending Rok had linked to. I thought the way that finished was kinda ackward.

***Spoiler***:

I thought they would actually use the fact that the demon turned on and off the lights in the last room the police looked into after shooting Katie. When I realized I had seen the original and not the theatrical ending, I was curious and looked it up. Seems more creepy. Apparently there is a 3rd ending in which Katie lures Micah down to the kitchen, kills him, returns to the bedroom where she takes the knife and slits her throat. Kinda messed up and apparently they screened it only once with mixed results but it may be on the Dvd.
I got nothin'.

Interesting. I'll have to look out for that.

Still, Andy, if you get the chance to see the final cut of the movie in it's entirety, I would do so. It just has a completely different feel to it than that awful alternate ending.

Anyway, if that was the original ending, then I can see why the movie was shelved for a couple of years.

I hadn't heard of the other endings.

*SPOILER*

Not seeing the alternates, I can't say for certain...but I like the sound of the last one Andy listed -- it seems to fit with the overall story better. Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie, but the idea of Katie still "at large" as some sort of rogue demon isn't as dark and creepy as the demon possessing her, having her kill Micah and then herself. I can see why they didn't use that one, though -- it wouldn't play as well with a mainstream audience.

Given that the demon supposedly had been pursuing her for years and wanted to truly "possess" her, personally I would have thought that an ending where she slit her own throat would have been a little odd. It may work, but I'm not sure. Suicide endings have become kinda cliche IMO.

I can see your point.

*SPOILERS*

I guess I'm thinking more of what (presumably) happened to the other woman that they found on the Internet. Didn't she ultimately die due to being possessed? Maybe I'm remembering wrong.

And maybe the demon didn't do the actual killing of Katie? Maybe whatever control Katie had left over herself she used to end it instead of spending the rest of her days as a demon. Anyway, it's interesting that there are other endings out there. The one they used was good -- and again, I can see why they used that one instead of the others.

** THERE ARE SPOILERS IN MY REPLY TO A REPLY TO A REPLY TO A SPOILER **
The woman previously possessed die by blood loss through chewing her arm off. BTW... that boyfriend was a total prick. Who in their right mind would show a loved one that video or do half the things this guy did?
I got nothin'.
