The Cards only scored 23 more runs than we did. They allowed 32 fewer. We actually weren't that far off on either side, but together it was enough for a 7-game difference in the standings.

The head-to-head play between the 2 teams dictated a lot IMO. I'd also like to see the standard deviation of runs scored, runs allowed and compare the 2 teams as that might uncover a lot of the difference in the consistency of play between both teams.

Which is what you'd expect from a 55-run difference in run-differential. The Cards were not this amazing juggernaught, and we didn't totally suck. They won 91 games. Had Bradley played closer to his ability, and Aramis played 150 games, we probably win 91 too, and like Twins-Tigers, are looking at a playoff. (Ok, maybe we only win 88 or so. Who knows?) Makes you wonder why we didn't try to match all of those mid-season moves the Cards made this year; without Holliday, DeRosa, etc., it's probably a race that goes down to the wire.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

My guess is that the ownership issue and our starting day payroll handcuffed us from making any significant wire deals this year.

Yes -- part of it was Hendry's fault, but a very large portion of it had to do with the ownership situation not being resolved.

Next year's team will (and should) look almost identical to this year's team. This season + Ramirez a full year - Kevin Gregg + Soto/Soriano in shape and productive = playoffs 09. So there's no reason the 2010 team, aside from canning Miles and whatever garbage role-players are left, should look any different than this team.
Experiment with Baker and if he sucks move Theriot there and move Blanco to SS. Sign a Molina, Barajas or Oliva as a backup. Keep Bradley. Keep Fox for the hurt Bradley. Our pitching is fine without Gregg. Click our heals together...
If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

And Lou and Hendry, to me anyway, built this team together after they got the blessing of Crane Kenney and Zell to spend like drunken sailors, so the fact that we have such a ridiculous number of bloated long-term, backloaded contracts and no one tried to stop them is a group effort. The uncertain ownership situation was awful timing as well, and was out of our front office's control. And I'm in no way giving anyone a free pass, but there is plenty of blame to go around.

The Cubs.... #3 in payroll, #16 in wins. Someone has to take the fall. Traditionally, it's the GM, but I do have to give him credit for cleverly shifting the blame to one <i>player</i>.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

The only one saying that Hendry is putting all of the blame for this season on Bradley is some douche baseball writer on the web who hasn't watched more than 6 Cubs games all season and simply misrepresented a bunch of comments by Hendry and Lou, taken completely out of context. I'm not sure when the story became, "Bradley is the scapegoat," but it couldn't be farther from the truth. It just makes for a juicy story for clueless out-of-town bloggers who want to make something out of nothing.

They are a top 3-5 revenue team so they should be near the top payroll. Until the Cubs scout, develop or draft better than other teams, they will have over pay for talent. |
