I go to about 1 movie a year. I try and save it for something that NEEDS to be on the big screen. Is this worth going to?

It has gotten piss-poor reviews pretty much across the board. I think I'm going to skip this one.

Maybe "Avatar" will be the one to see on the big screen, but I'm skeptical.

I'm waiting for The Road...

the piss poor reviews kind of crack me up. If you're going to this movie thinking about academy awards and a great plot, then you're missing the point. this isn't to be watched but to be seen. the special effects are going to be spectacular and the acting will be good enough. I promised my kids I'd take them to "New Moon" otherwise we'd be watching this one for sure.

What's the other movie coming that looks exactly like The Road? I saw a trailer when I went to see Where The Wild Things Are.

There are movies with amazing special effects that actually have a decent storyline and competent acting. You don't have to sacrifice one for the other.

that's odd. The first 3 reviews I looked at were the Sun Times (Ebert gave it 3.5 stars), the Tribune (3 stars) and Variety (they seemed to like it). I checked Metacritic, and it got a number of very good reviews. It's overall score is 50, which means this is pretty much Citizen Kane territory for Emmerich, at least critically.

Odd. Metacritic assigns the Variety review an 80, rotten tomatoes assigns the same review a thumbs down (splattered tomato).

peter travers gave it one star.

butch, i tend to agree with you to an extent. but when it comes to end of the world stuff, i can overlook a faulty plot line.

and john cusack and danny glover are more than competent actors. i think this will be a fine movie for what it is.

After I read a few of Ebert's recent reviews (he mentioned things in certain movies that never happened and provided incorrect explanations for several scenes as well), I am starting to have very little use for his opinion these days. I know he's in poor health, but seriously, he needs a better editor or something.
