Actually, I think the Cubs are in a much better position than last year, should Ramirez miss time. Apparently we have Castro who is on the verge of being MLB ready and we have Baker now instead of Miles. An injury to Ramirez could enable the Cubs to slide Baker to 3B, Theriot to 2B, and Castro to SS, with Fontenot being a super-sub.

I guess I'm still just not sold that Castro could do much at the major league level yet. I haven't seen him play much, but he made a lot of errors and a .740 OPS in A-ball doesn't really scream out major league ready, especially when he is 19.

Baker would be better than Miles though, for sure.

From what he's produced thus far, I can only surmise from the hype surrounding him that Castro has one hell of a publicist.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Cubs courting Gomes as fourth outfielder
January 21, 2010 4:29 PM | No Comments
By Paul Sullivan

The Cubs are talking to free-agent outfielder Jonny Gomes, according to major-league sources.

The 29-year-old corner outfielder is a right-handed hitter who would serve as the team's fourth outfielder, platooning with Kosuke Fukudome in right field. He hit 20 home runs and drove in 51 runs in only 281 at-bats last year, and had a .307 average against left-handed pitchers.

Gomes was non-tendered by Cincinnati last December and spent most of his career with Tampa Bay.

The Cubs also are talking to Jermaine Dye and Xavier Nady, as previously reported.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

If Nady signs somewhere else fairly cheap and we sign this Gomes douche, I will be PO'd to say the least.

What am I missing? Gomes was great last year, even away from GAB. He dominates lefties (and hit righties plenty well last year).

It should be spelled "Johnny", not "Jonny", dammit.

I really can't stand that when parents do that to their kids. If you're going to choose a name that has a standard spelling, SPELL IT THE STANDARD WAY.

Otherwise, you've doomed the kid to a lifetime of saying "actually, there's no H."

Brock: Yeah, that one drives me nuts, too.

Ace: Infuckingdeed. Or having unnecessary letters, like Jayson and Laynce Nix.

Jayson Werth gets a pass because he was an awesome waiver wire pickup for me last year.

It's actually pronounced "Yonni", you know like the great musician.
Fat Bastard is an immensely obese, hardly able to walk (weighing a metric ton) gardener and henchman hailing from Scotland. His extreme size endows Fat Bastard with super-human strength as exhibited by his prowess in the Sumo ring from Goldmember. This makes him a formidable enemy for Austin Powers. Fat Bastard is noted for his foul temper, his frequent flatulence, his vulgar and revolting bad manners and his unusual eating habits, which include taste for Human infants (which he calls "the other other white meat") or anything that looks like a baby, e.g. small people. Fat Bastard has been a regular at Cub games since the early 80's when he tried several times (unsuccessfully) to eat the visiting San Diego Chicken.

He's been sucky for most of his career though, and still can't get on base (aside from 2005), not that it's everything, but it matters since he would most likely get a ton of ABs given the need to rest Alf and sit Fuk against lefties. All I'm saying is that there are better options out there, and for not very much more in terms of dollars.
