It appears as though arbitration has started. Corey Hart just won his arbitration (kind of surprising actually). Just wondering if anyone has heard when we should hear about Theriot?

This will be Hendry's first arb case. Theriot is looking for $3.4 and the Cubs are at $2.6.

I know I'm going to get slammed for this, but I'm just throwing it out there.

Theriot UZR/150 last year = 8.3 (above average)
Theriot plus/minus from 2005-2008 at shortstop = +7 (above average)

I realize you guys will piss all over defensive metrics all day long, but when a defensive metric tells me that Adam Everett, Jimmy Rollins, Omar Vizquel, Troy Tulowitzki, and Jack Wilson are the best shortstops while David Eckstein, Michael Young, Hanley Ramirez, Felipe Lopez, and Derek Jeter are the worst, I have to think it's at least a little tiny tincey wincey bit acurate.

That being said, I relish the moment Castro is ready to make the jump to the majors. He'll save more runs than Theriot will. Until then, I have no problem with Theriot playing shortstop.

Theriot isn't a terrible player, but it is pretty clear the past few seasons with the way he's faded at the end that he shouldn't be out there for 150 games, and especially not as a starting SS. And the fact that those UZR rankings show some of the better defensive SS's are also some of the worst hitters (Rollins being one of the exceptions although he had a shitty year), and the worst fielders are some of the best hitters at their positions, still doesn't make me feel all that great about having Theriot at that position every day.

Yeah, but I think Theriot lies somewhere in between both of those groups. He's average defensively and average offensively. I can live with average from our shortstop.

Look, were talking less than 1 million from a team that overpaid Bradley last season, knowing damn well he came with a ton a baggage. A team that gave a ridiculous long term deal to Soriano to keep him going to the <i>other</i> Chicago Cubs team that we were bidding against.
I swear that Larry Himes is back dealing with these player contracts.

Theriot doesn't have 1% of the upside those guys had at the time of their signings. Sure, they were terrible, but in the moment Soriano was coming off one of the best seasons by a player in recent memory, and Bradley had come into his own, or so we thought. We know what Theriot is, he's an mediocre ballplayer.

Sure, it's chump change, but if we're going to stop making bad deals, we should start on someone like Theriot, today. Plus, there's no advantage in caving with him. Castro is the future, so who cares if wee-man gets his feelings hurt.
