Because he has the same look of the arrogant "I'm gonna get that chick in the 3rd row wet with my power stroke rather than hit that lame single to right field" piece of shit he was all of last year. He's a cocky dumbshit.

Imagine he has another average year, and the Cubs keep him. He'll get something like $3 mill in arbitration next year.

Had he won, there is a very real chance that the Cubs would non-tender him next year after an average season, and then he might get only $1 mill or so on the free agent market.

Lots of ifs, but it's just sort of an ironic thing to think about.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Theriot is not a one million dollar free agent...he's worth more in the open market.

However, he's not a free agent...so, his value must be judged as such.

Free agent rates are reserved for those who have achieved free agency. He can't expect to receive them, just because he's gone to arbitration.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Um... what?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I know how badly you want this, Drudge...but, the sarcasm blew up on re-entry.

If Theriot were a free agent, I think he'd have gotten paid more than 2.6M.

He's not...he doesn't have the benefit of leveraging one offer against another, and an arbitrator isn't going to treat him as though he can pick through offers.

He got paid according to his native value to his current team.

But...you already knew that.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Your point makes no sense in the context of what you were responding to. No one said anything about what Theriot would make as a free agent this year. I discussed what he'd make if he were non-tendered following an average season AFTER this season.

I'm not sure how you get that from this photo. Also, wasn't Theriot more than happy to keep lining singles to right field before Lou told him to try to pull the ball hard?

Major League shortstops I would rather have for the 2010 season than Theriot:
Jimmy Rollins
Derek Jeter
Rafael Furcal
Hanley Ramirez
Marco Scutaro
Troy Tulowitzki
Yunel Escobar
Jason Bartlett
Erick Aybar
Elvis Andrus

That's ten shortstops out of 30 starting shortstops. Theriot is average and there's nothing wrong with average.

You're right, Theriot is an average 2B, he's nowhere near average at SS. You need to add about 10-15 names to your list. You love to suck his scrote though, I'll give you that.

Add Jose Reyes to that list, assuming his leg hasn't been amputated.

The Reds just signed Orlando Cabrera to a 3mil deal with a 1 mil buyout next year. If we assume that is "the market", then I am fine with Theriot 2.6 mil.
I like you guys a lot.

According to the best fielding statistics out there, Theriot is a slightly above average defensive shortstop. Along with that, he's at least average at the plate. I don't know what to tell you here. Yes, the fielding statistics may be wrong, but you suggest that Theriot is among the worst defensive shortstops in the league. If that were true, I would think there would be some stat out there that would at least reflect that to some degree.

I know you are going to tell me "my own eyes tell me that he's a bad defender". I've watched him over the years too, and I never understood the hate for his fielding. Of course he's no magician out there, but I always thought he was an average defender. I know plenty of people agree with me.

You on the other hand have always had an unusual hate for Theriot. It started when he first came up and you said he couldn't produce at the plate. After he kept producing, you continued on to his fielding. Crapping on his fielding is pretty convenient because it's such a subjective thing to judge.

I think you say Theriot is a horrible defender because you need a reason to hate him. I'm not saying we should be thrilled with him, but the hate is just unnecessary.

I took a look at a list of shortstops who played last year. I'm fairly confident that you would agree with me on this list. The only exception is Reyes as Dave pointed out. I agree with him assuming he's healthy. You might throw Alcides Escobar in there too, but I think Theriot will out produce him at least this year if not more than that.

I haven't looked at stats, but I would probably throw Alexei Ramirez in there also.
