Fair enough. Pesci plays Pesci, mad Pesci, goofy Pesci...it's a cartoon and boring to me and I've never seen him strike an emotional note that seemed genuine or difficult.

You want actors. DeNiro is an actor. Daniel Day Lewis is an actor. I'm coming around on DiCaprio. I think Pesci is a hack.

That's preposterous. Just because the two movies are about the mafia, and are done in the same "style" doesn't mean he shouldn't have done the movie. Casino is a great film, not the masterpiece that goodfellas is, but still one of my favorite movies and extremely well made and acted. If the only films that entertain you are "completely original" material, then I feel sorry that you rarely are entertained.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I think Scorsese's incredibly overrated post "King Of Comedy." "Goodfellas," "Gangs of New York" and "The Departed" were decent." "Casino" wasn't bad but it was more of the same, and Joe Pesce is just awful. Once was enough.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Holy fuck.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

We don't all like the same things but only a retard thinks Joe Pesce can act.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Pesci.

And you're nuts. Pesci might be a one-trick pony (that's as far as I'm willing to go), but he's fucking awesome at that one trick.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

A trick is good only the first time you see it.

And so I'm nuts. I'm too old to give a shit whether anyone shares my likes or dislikes...unless we're talking about baseball.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
And I guess I'm retarded.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Only if you give a shit that I think Pesci fans are retarded. Seriously, do you give a shit?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Not really.

But I just assumed that if you're willing to make a statement like that, you're also willing to discuss your side of it. If you'd rather just say Joe Pesci fans are retarded and then move on to the next thread, that's fine too.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Daniel Day Lewis turned in one of my favorite acting appearances of all time in There Will Be Blood. If there's one thing we can agree on its that he and DeNiro are possibly the best actors of their generation.

I can see why some folks would feel that way about Pesci. His characters don't typically don't have a ton of depth and he really only has one or two notes he can hit.

I suppose I just find that note believable/effective and you don't.

And there are very few actors in the same stratosphere as DeNiro and DDL. Pesci isn't one of them. I still think he was awesome in his Scorsese roles. I actually have a hard time thinking of who I would prefer in those roles -- particularly GoodFellas.

I don't think an actor needs to fit neatly into some dramatic ideal or be capable of transforming him/herself into any character he/she chooses in order to be considered good. In the roles that he's chosen, Pesci has been just about perfect for those parts. I just can't imagine anyone else playing the parts of the characters as Pesci did in the movies that I listed before. Now, if you dislike those types of movies in general, then there is no way Pesci's style will ever appeal to you.

No one. Can you imagine anyone but DeNiro in either of those two films? I can't.

I'm not talking about that at all. I'm talking about the ability to reveal something emotionally that I can believe in.

He can project a particular personality and the screenwriters (or at least the film editors) aren't subjecting him or us to very much that he can't do but I don't ever feel like I'm seeing anything genuine or human when he's performing.

First of all, fuck you guys for turning my thread about a WWII Mini-series into a discussion about Joe Pesci.

Second of all, I was never a fan of Good Fellas or Casino, or Pesci's performances. But I've just never been a fan of the genre. I've never seen a Godfather picture all the way through, and I don't think I saw Fellas or Casino in full either. I'm just not much into the mob shit. Although I did enjoy Gangs and Departed.

I think Gangs of New York is seriously underrated. It was a travesty that DDL didn't win best actor. I loved how Scorsese created a weird parallel world in 19th century New York. It was just a really cool twist to the real world that he placed it in. A lot of people didn't like it, I thought it was great.
