Blanco got into yesterday's game late as a sub at shortstop - first action in over two weeks.

I don't think he is going to make the team. I could be wrong but I just don't see it.

I don't think so either - the only issue with him: out of options.

Which is lame. When you have about the worst defense in the league, would be nice to keep an outstanding defensive middle infielder around. He could be used in the 8th inning+ in about every game. Also, he's the best interview on the team.

He'd never be a late-inning sub for Theriot, though (that is to say, Lou wouldn't yank Theriot late). So he'd be taking up a bench spot so we could have a late-inning defensive sub at second base, and a very occasional spot start at short. And no bat. I won't pitch a fit either way, but I'd rather keep Tracy.

Probably, which is also lame(unless Theriot's getting on base at a .390 clip like in 08 and we can't afford to take his bat out). Blanco's a waste of a bat for sure, but I'm just worried enough about our defense where I could let that slide.

We possibly have the worst middle infield and LF/CF combos in baseball defensively. We have a blah catcher defensively, an inconsistent third baseman defensively who is currently not 100%... really our only good players on defense are Lee and Fukudome(and they're both very very good of course, and Lee saves the rest of the crappy infield at least a handful of errors each year). I'm very very worried about this. I just can't remember a defense that looked this bad on paper that went on to win a championship. I suppose if you had a juggernaut offense and pitching staff you could, but we probably don't have either.

I've always been a big Chad Tracy guy and would keep him over Millar, but I'm not sure over Blanco unless they're really confident he can be like his old self.

Good to see Ramirez get some ABs today. Two hits, too. I'll feel better when he's able to play 3B and not just DH...

I was going to post separately about my fear of the defense on this team. Generally speaking, I think players defensive weaknesses are overrated about as much as I think "high end prospects" are overrated. However, this spring, the Cubs have been terrible defensively. I know plenty of the errors have come from minor league players, but it seems every game there's been at least 1 unearned run against us. If that trend continues, it's really going to bite the team in the ass.
I got nothin'.

This team is incredibly weak up the middle. I know that isn't a profound observation, but we seriously may need to put up 2008-like offensive numbers just to remain competitive, especially withing the bullpen looking so iffy as well. I'm prepared for the worst.

Theriot would never be benched in late innings for Blanco, which is true, but I could envision Lou moving Theriot to second and bringing in Blanco for SS. Because he is out of options, they mifght try to trade him for something. Honestly though, last year was the first I ever remember seeing him in the bigs.

As far as Millar, I can easily see him making the team over Tracy. For one, he has out hit him, and Piniella loves the guy. We may not like Millar on the team, but we may have to accept it

Last 10 World Series winners' fielding percentage and rank in mlb in parentheses:

2009- Yankees... .985 (10th)

2008- Phillies... .985 (8th)

2007- Red Sox... .986 (4th)

2006- Cardinals... .984 (10th)

2005- White Sox... .985 (9th)

2004- Red Sox... .981 (23rd)

2003- Marlins... .987 (3rd)

2002- Angels... .986 (4th)

2001- Diamondbacks... .986 (2nd)

2000- Yankees... .981 (14th)

So aside from two times, the WS winners were top 10 in the majors in fielding percentage. Last year we were 23rd, and I can't see it being better than that this time around.

Remember that Blanco was hurt in that 1st TV ST game.

I feel like there is going to be a big trade soon.
Something--anything--this has been the most boring offeseason ever.
Fat Bastard is an immensely obese, hardly able to walk (weighing a metric ton) gardener and henchman hailing from Scotland. His extreme size endows Fat Bastard with super-human strength as exhibited by his prowess in the Sumo ring from Goldmember. This makes him a formidable enemy for Austin Powers. Fat Bastard is noted for his foul temper, his frequent flatulence, his vulgar and revolting bad manners and his unusual eating habits, which include taste for Human infants (which he calls "the other other white meat") or anything that looks like a baby, e.g. small people. Fat Bastard has been a regular at Cub games since the early 80's when he tried several times (unsuccessfully) to eat the visiting San Diego Chicken.
