2010 Minor League Roundup
I like that we have promising pitching in the minors. How do Archer and Diamond rank in top prospect lists? Are they highly thought of by scouts?

Diamond was once an elite prospect. Pretty sure he was a top 100 prospect at one point. He is past that point though. Archer is not on anyone's top 100 list but I could see him getting that kind of recognition if he reproduces his numbers from last year. Lots of evaluators feel he will be a bullpen arm though so I think that knocks his value way down. He needs to prove to people he is a starter.

For the Cubs, I think Cashner, Jackson, Carpenter, Rhee, McNutt, and Antigua have higher ceilings as starters than either of those two guys. They are extremely capable of proving me wrong though if they both are able to keep their walk rates down.

Diamond is trying to be a nice comeback, feel good story. He is far from an elite prospect now days.

<!--QuoteBegin-John Sickels+-->QUOTE (John Sickels)<!--QuoteEBegin-->**One year ago, Texas A&M product Brooks Raley was being speculated as a possible late first round pick, due to his athleticism and intriguing two-way production in college. He posted a 3.76 ERA with a 95/26 K/BB in 93 innings for the Aggies, while also hitting .304/.404/.424 with 25 steals in 29 attempts. Scouts preferred him on the mound, though worries about his signability as a draft-eligible sophomore knocked him down to the sixth round where the Cubs took him. It took $750,000 to sign him. Scouts theorized that he would thrive as a pitcher once he gave up the outfield, but it hasn't worked out that way: he is 0-3, 5.52 ERA at High-A Daytona, with a 33/15 K/BB in 29 innings but 42 hits allowed. The K/IP ratio is good, but his control has been disappointing and he's given up a lot of hits. Raley has an 87-92 MPH fastball, and his breaking ball and changeup both have promise, but it is clear that adjustments are necessary. I still think he is intriguing because of his overall athleticism, but he isn't developing as rapidly as I'd hoped.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

That's about in line with where he was last year.

That is what I was thinking...not sure why he put the eye roll. I know he is going to say that fields in the minors are bad and things like that, but 15 errors is 15 errors, that is a lot any way you look at it.

I can't wait until Cashner is ready to help the big league club. However, I'm afraid we might rush him like we did Castro.
