2010 Minor League Roundup

I'm just used to Coach's responses in this thread being directed to my thoughts on Cashner.
Just having some fun.
But the same can be said for Cashner as well.

I want the best players in our system to be available to our big league team. This babying of guys doesnt help or help them. Everyone will face some adversity, and the good ones will overcome it. We could have left Patterson in the minors for 3 more years, and he still wouldnt have been able to listen plate discipline.

Believe me, I'm not for babying prospects. But, there is a reason they go through the minor leagues.

Castro for instance hasn't played much ball past A+. AA is where you really start seeing a lot of breaking balls, so I'd like to see him work on hitting a breaking ball before he's up with the Cubs. He's proving to be able to do just that, but it doesn't hurt to give him time to work on it rather than bringing him up and letting him learn on the fly.

That being said, if Castro was brought up tomorrow and got the majority of the starts at SS, I wouldn't complain. He's been challenged a few times by aggressive promotions and handled it very well.

Cashner is just a different animal all together. I really do want to see him get experience starting and maybe get a shot at the rotation next year. A starting pitcher is so much more valuable than a reliever and in my mind, you can't ask him to relieve this year and not expect him to need more time in the minors going forward if you ultimately want him to start. Get it out of the way this year and we can be set with a young power pitcher in the rotation for years to come starting next year.

This team is built to win now. If we have a guy in the minors that could help our biggest weakness, then I say let's go for it.

With that, Im done with this topic.

I don't think there's anything more to discuss. It sounds like a difference of opinion in that you feel the Cubs are able to compete this year, but will have to rebuild before competing again (correct if I'm wrong) where as I think with careful planning they will be able to sustain that competitive talent by plugging in minor league talent and utilizing money that will be freeing up over the next few years for good free agent signings.

What if he comes to spring training next year and has to be built up again which keeps him from starting the year in the rotation? And what if he makes the Cubs rotation next year and burns out at the end of July because he's not used to pitching a full baseball season?

If Starlin is slated for our rotation next year, then we are in trouble.

We'd be mediocre with or without a solid pen. We're so bad at defense it really wouldn't matter. We have no shot at the playoffs no matter what happens.

I believe what he means is, is that if we don't do it this year with this core, it won't happen.
I hate my pretentious sounding username too.

If we had to chose between the current roster being setup to win now or in the future, it is obviously that our best chance is sooner rather than later.

One different guy in the bullpen is not going to make this team better. Even if Cashner came up and was lights out he couldn't pitch everyday. We would still have to deal with Grabow and his shittastic appearances.

I do believe that the defense would improve if we brought up Castro and moved Theriot to 2nd base, but I am still not sure it is going to help us that much.
