I hope Archer makes it, so he can be nicknamed "Danger Zone."

Keith Law highlighted some fall league players. Chris Carpenter was on of them.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Cubs right-hander Chris Carpenter fell to the third round in the 2008 draft due to medical concerns, and he's been largely a five-inning starter during his two full years in pro ball, finishing seven full innings just twice in 2010. In a relief role on Wednesday, Carpenter threw 93-96 -- including one 96 to the backstop -- with a hard slurve at 84-85 with some depth, as well as a curveball with more vertical break and one changeup at 85. The fastball lacks movement and there's a little effort in the delivery, but at worst he is a power reliever who could work the eighth or ninth inning in the majors.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I can't tell if you're being serious or not. What is Archer's upside BTW? Forgive me if you've answered this question before.

If you can tell anything from minor league stats, his upside is Roy Oswalt.

Between Daytona and Tennessee, he went 15-3, 2.34 ERA, with 149K in 142 IP.

Well, that's why I asked what his true upside is. His last 2 seasons were pretty impressive, but prior to that (albeit at a very young age), he had serious control issues. I'm trying not to get too excited about this kid, but he's really all that we have aside from Cashner in the way of promising SPs who are one year or less away from cracking the rotation. What I'd like to know is the sort of arsenal this kid has, what he's worked on down in the minors, what he's improved on the most, and what his best pitches are at this point. I'd love to see him in ST.

I believe he did have control issues, but then again he's only 22.

Both comments had to do with the way the Cubs have handled Cashner.

Archer can be an elite starter. Law was on the money though with his durability. I'm hoping he starts pitching more 6 innings games next year. From what I know, Archer used to use his curve as his go to pitch in the past and now uses his slider quite a bit more.

Also, besides Cashner and Archer, Carpenter is a legit pitcher that could be a solid number 3 with upside for more. McNutt is young, but he'll start out in AA next year, so he has a chance to be a September call up.

Thanks, Scarey. I'm aware of all of the above names, but aside from looking at their numbers, it's hard for me to read into who has potential and who doesn't. This helps put things in perspective.

He's a great ground ball thrower though. I really think he could be a staple in the rotation for years. Conversely, a guy like Jay Jackson who is an extreme fly ball hitter needs to either be traded or used out of the bullpen.

Because of Wrigley, you mean? I know Jackson is no Kerry Wood, but Wood was an extreme fly ball pitcher and he did all right at Wrigley.

Yes, but Wood was also an extreme strikeout pitcher. Jackson can strike guys out too, but not comparable to Wood. What worries me about Jackson is that his HR/9 have gone up and his K/9 have gone down as he's advanced. What really sucks is last year he was pitching ridiculously well. He was on pace to be Archer for Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Then the Cubs decided to try him out of the pen and he was very mediocre after that.

While Jackson could work out well for the Cubs, I still think he has more value to an NL West pitcher.
