It was an emergency start. Rusin was supposed to make the start but was scratched (I forget why but it wasn't too serious). However, it is a pleasant surprise to see him go 5 innings. Maybe they think about converting him?

Archer seemed to have resolved whatever control problems he was having prior to his promotion to AA, but I just looked it up. Not sure if the numbers have been updated or not through the last game, but 33 BB in 56 IP in AA has me a little concerned. Aside from some control issues that seem to come and go, I like what I am hearing. I'm curious to see him pitch in ST. I he still 6'2" / 165? Fucking stick man.

Ha that is skinny. Fucking beanpole. But if he can bring it...maybe he is "effectively wild"??? After reading the Sun Times Article about keeping Z and the rotation mainly in tact, eh, I am 100% eager to see some of these young guys in ST. At least it gives me something to kind of look forward to...

Hard to tell from these pics. He looks pretty thin. What's the conventional wisdom on a pitcher's weight and effectiveness? Bigger frame/more endurance, right? Maybe he can start an all-milkshake diet...

He doesn't appear to be nearly as wiry as I had assumed, although he almost looks like he has two completely different bodies in those 2 pics. Nothing freakish about him at least.

Yea, but have you ever heard those who reference that notion give reasons for the notion? It's usually pretty stupid. I remember when Juan Cruz was with the team people discussing how he'd never be able to go more than 5 innings because he lacked endurance because he lacked weight...now don't those two things tend to contradict each other in every other activity that isn't pitching? Does anyone ever say, "man that marathon runner needs to put on a few pounds"? I guess people just don't understand how energy is created within the body. It's not like when Bobby Jenks is out there sweating it out his body is just converting fat into adrenaline through alchemical means. There's sugars, protein, and creatine and adrenaline that get used waaaay before the breakdown of lipids. The weight that pitchers in the majors gain as their careers progress, IMO, is the same that any man gets as their metabolism starts to slow with age. Maddux didn't add weight to make his endurance higher. He did it because he got older.

One thing that I will say about weight and mechanics that might have some merit is the potential for less spastic are movements against the axis of the muscle when a guy has less physical range of motion due to his fatness. Someone like Livan Hernandez doesn't risk changing his arm location during a movement as much, thus risking injury to the shoulder, because he doesn't have as much range of motion as someone like Carlos Marmol. But, that's just my theory, and I don't think it's enough to say that more weight = more effective pitcher.
