2010 Minor League Roundup
Samardzija's SO/BB rate at Iowa is 1.47.
Consider me unimpressed.

That completely ignores the fact that he's striking out almost nine per 9 innings and is allowing less than six hits per 9 innings (as a basis for comparison, David Price averaged 7.5 hits per 9 innings while he was in the minors; his best was 6.6 in 57 innings at AA). That's pretty impressive.

What do we have to lose with Samardzija? Give him another shot and see what happens. Cot's says we have club options on him for 2012 and 2013. It appears the total value of the options is $6.5M, but I have no idea how that is broken out each year. That's quite resonable if he can even become a #5 starter for this team. Lets not forget that his first season concentrating soley on baseball was 2007. The only reason we hold him in such contempt is b/c we singed him for so much. In 2008 he has a solid month in the Bigs working in relief. I never liked him because I despise ND, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't get another opportunity.

That completely ignores the fact that he's walking almost six per 9 innings (as a basis for comparison, David Price averaged 3.1 walks per 9 innings while he was in the minors; his worst was 4.7 in 34 1/3 innings at AAA). That's pretty unimpressive.

That's how I see it. We're on the hook next year regardless. Might as well see what he's got.

I already accounted for the poor walk total... I mentioned it in my first post. I said I could over look them to the extent of giving him another shot in the bigs because the Ks and BAA. I was just pointing out that you're using one very specific stat to evaluate him that doesn't happen to take into account what he's actually done well.

The BB totals have always bothered me with regard to Shark because he seems to be inconsistent striking out ML hitters whenever he does get called up. It's troubling that his K/BB ratio has been consistently around 1.4-1.5 for his career, so it's hard to see this as an improvement, Ks aside. What is his Flyball/Groundball ratio?

I'll work on the satirical analysis.

Dont just take my word for it:

Show me a Jeff Samardzija with a good ERA, and I'll show you a Jeff Samardzija with a fluky-low BABIP (.231, in this case).<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I think this is why it would be beneficial to get info on his GB/FB ration which I believe is very good this year. BABIP is an awesome stat, but you need GB/FB and LD% to put it into context. Take Soto last year. He had an unusually low BABIP. That means nothing if he's just ground out to the shortstop 1 of every 5 ABs. But, he had a greater than normal LD% which usually would indicate that he was unlucky which he's showing this year that was probably true.

I'm not saying you're wrong about Samardzija Coach. Believe me, I'm not on the bandwagon. I just don't see any reason not to give him some starts in the majors.

I'm not saying we shouldn't give him some starts. I'm just saying that he hasn't impressed me.
