Old music recommendations
#1
This thread isn't meant to be just for me to vamp in. I don't imagine it being constrained but I will tell you why I'm starting it and how I plan to post in it.

I've been pretty much obsessed with popular music since I was about eight years-old. My affection and familiarity begins to wane in the early '90s (precisely when I began writing criticism, professionally...sort of coincidentally...sort of not). I was a fan before I was a critic and I was smart enough to resign as a critic before I forgot how to be a fan.

I think there's great music from the past that's grossly under-appreciated. Some of it was once heralded and has mysteriously gained obscurity with age. Other music was just never well-known.

Partly because it's just who I am and partly because of the show I do, I'm digging all the time. I find wonderful stuff. I reconsider wonderful stuff that has receded from view.

I am an album-sharing blog junkie. In this thread I'm going to post links to the blog posts for albums for which I think people may share my affinity. I'm also pretty sure that you'll find exploring other posts on these blogs fun. They're candy stores.

I'm going to post those links because I think the blogger sharing the album deserves their blog post to accompany what they share, whether I agree with their views or not. As such, some of the download links will probably go bad...it's the nature of those sorts of posts.

I'm thinking that I'll post links to things twenty or more years old. Some of it will be stuff I never heard until recently myself.

I would be grateful for other people's old music recommendations.

The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society

If you haven't heard this, you've heard songs from it. You've heard some used in commercials. To me, this is an example of something great from a period in music history, that a century from now, will look brief...the album era. Pop music was once a singles medium almost exclusively. It's headed back there again...rapidly. From about 1967 till some time recently....hard to pin down a moment here...the album was important.

This is a truly great album. Not because I can or care to justify that critically...but just because I love it. maybe you'll like it too...if you're not already familiar with it.

The Wikipedia post about this is pretty informative...and information is something I care more about than judgments.

If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

King Crimson
QUOTE "In the Court of King Crimson" - 1969

This King Crimson album is a real classic. It means a lot to me due to it being around during the time I was experimenting with drugs, to a point that is - I never wanted to try chemical drugs, avoided coke and heroin and would never even consider things like crack...but I liked the so called 'natural' highs from various plants or mushrooms. I remember hearing this alvbum for the first time shortly after taking some Liberty Cap mushrooms when I was about 17...

Shit yes. That Crimson is everything that was right about prog back then. Then again, just about every incarnation of KC has been.

I share this guy's mixed feelings about Frank Zappa...a brilliant guy and talented musician and composer that probably wouldn't have given a shit that he undermined his credibility with too many insipid dick jokes.

This on the other hand is a great listen if you don't know it:

http://idontcareaboutsleep.blogspot.com/20...s-1969-vbr.html

The bass player on Hot Rats is Shuggie Otis, the son of the great Johnny Otis. Shuggie is better known to me as a guitar player and there's an album by him that hardly anyone has heard that I'll have to find a link for...
