Command versus Control
#1
Something has really been bothering me lately, and I keep seeing it so often that I'm starting to question whether maybe I'm just wrong.

I keep seeing media people using "command" and "control" interchangeably. In my mind, that's not right. "Command" is the ability to throw your various pitches - fastball, sinker, curve, etc. - when you want to, and throw them effectively for strikes. "Control," on the other hand, is the ability to locate your pitches, and generally throw strikes.

So am I wrong, or are people just getting really lazy with their words?

You are right, but if you have no control, it would be tough to have command as well.

I suppose you could say command is your ability to put what you want, where you want. Control is the ability to throw strikes.

Yeah. I think they're obviously related (that is to say, good command will require some good control), but definitely not the same thing.

Ace, you got it. Control is throwing strikes or locating pitches on the plate. Command is strategically pitching your pitches.

It's a lot like the difference between a thrower, and a pitcher. A thrower(Shark) uses speed and movement to throw the ball to try to get guys out. A pitcher(Wells) locates his different pitches according to a strategy.
I hate my pretentious sounding username too.

What if someone were to say that a pitcher "has command of the strike zone?"
If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

Just joking, man~ You've got it right.

I still tend to think there's a clear difference.

I think he is pretty much right but I care to little to really get into it. I get what Ace is saying but I still don't think there is that much difference. When you know little about a pitcher and you hear he has good command don't you assume he is going to have good control? I don't see a big of enough difference for it to be a big deal.

I think the terms are interchangeable, and Ace is just being the Semantics King. I guess it beats being the Semetics King, but I still wouldn't brag about it.
