The Royals just outright released him. It's hard to tell why, since their middle relief is as bad as ours, and he has a 3.38 ERA. He also has 7 K's in 4 innings, so he's missing bats.
That's the good news. The bad news is, maybe he's not missing enough bats, because his WHIP is sky-high. And the Royals owe him 3 million bucks this year, so they must have a good reason to be axing his chicken-ass.
At least you'd think. The Royals are the worst-run org. in MLB, so who knows?
Anyway, we'd only have to pay Cruz the minimum. At the very least, he could replace Shark, no?

At the surface, it appears Cruz has other issues than pitching but he should still have better stuff than Mr Spellcheck so bring him in and end the z experiment before it starts

I believe his WHIP is about 2.5. That ERA is pure luck.
This bullpen does not need another boom or bust - it needs a consistent strike-thrower. To be honest, I was kind of excited when I heard about Braden Looper. Not sexy, but if he's still got it, he was always a solid reliever (albeit a terrible starter).

Yeah, Looper's probably the better bet, but Cruz could work out too.

I think the most maddening thing in baseball is a relief pitcher who doesn't throw strikes. Cruz seems like a K or BB guy. Maybe KC, with Farnsworth already on the staff, doesn't have enough Pepto-Bismal.

I guarantee that the minute Cruz came here, he would suck. Not saying he isn't worth the gamble, but I just have a bad feeling about him. Same goes for any other former Cub relievers.

Yeah, let's go find George Frazier or maybe we need another Fontenot--how about Ray? He's probably available--he can give up his crawdad catching for a few months.
I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.

Fair enough. I didn't check his most recent stats, but remembered that he had turned into a decent reliever over the years. I guess I should have just said Cruz would "continue" to suck if we signed him.

If Juan Cruz can be had for the veteran minimum, I think it's worth a shot. One thing's for sure, with that new law in Arizona, no way he's headed back to the Diamondbacks!

He can be. At this point, he might accept a minor league contract.
Are we that overflowing with mid-90's throwing arms who have had recent success as a MLB reliever?
