Not shocking news, but it's good to see that's it's set in stone:
QUOTE Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said Friday he has no doubt that shortstop and top prospect Starlin Castro will join the big-league team this season, but he wouldn't guess at a date.

Castro is hitting .353 in 20 games for Double-A Tennessee.

"He's coming along very well," Hendry said on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "[Assistant GM] Randy Bush just visited the Double-A club for about five games, and we certainly feel he's going to be a very, very good player for a long time.

"He's swinging the bat well and working on all the nuances that will make him successful when he gets here. I don't have any doubts you'll see him in Chicago this season, but to put an exact date on it would be foolish."

Hendry said he's talked to current shortstop Ryan Theriot about changing positions when Castro is ready.

"Ryan and I had some good, honest chats that the day may come when Castro arrives that he'll have to move off short," Hendry said. "And I think Ryan was receptive to that.

"You just want to give him enough notice to help him get ready for that when that day comes. Ryan is capable of being a .300 hitter and a very good infielder when he does move."
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

Theriot needs to start taking grounders at 2B yesterday.

I hate my pretentious sounding username too.

IF this kid pans out, I can envision Theriot being a very solid second baseman. The middle of the infield would be pretty decent..

I'd go to second base with Theriot.

I honestly don't think anyone would have a problem with Theriot in the lineup if he was our 2nd baseman. I think people have a problem with him at SS because of his limited range and arm. Like you Tom, at second base I believe he would be just fine....then we would also have a true SS to backup Castro or give him a day off.

If Castro keeps hitting like he is I see no reason the Cubs wouldn't call him up in June.

He'd still be one of the dumbest baserunners on the planet as a 2nd baseman.

Is anyone worried that the transition from one really hard position (SS) to another hard one (2B) isn't going to be seamless? Ryan isn't that great at SS, and now he's gotta learn to turn the double-play backwards, adjust his throws, etc.

Does he have decent experience at 2b? He can probably do it, but guys often have a hard time switching positions. Even A-Rod and Ripken had a hard time moving from short to third, and playing 2B is a lot harder than playing third.

He was a secondbaseman most his career before he moved to short 3 years ago. He has played 79 games at second in the majors.

I don't think the transition should be all that hard for him.

At LSU, Theriot was the 2B and Fontenot was the SS.

Good news. OK, so I'm a dumbshit...Theriot will probably thrive at second, since it seems to be his natural position.
Carry on.
